What does ageing look like from within? What changes, and what doesn’t?
A woman changes her work. Finds new pleasures. Lives alone. Finds new ways of belonging. Falls in love. Cares for others. Misses what she has lost. Adjusts to a changing body. Finds freedom in some things, constraint in others. Keeps making sense of what comes next.
Cultures of Ageing brings together the stories of older women in Kolkata to explore ageing as a lived, shifting experience. Across different lives, circumstances and histories, these stories trace how women negotiate and navigate changing relationships, work, desire, care, solitude, intimacy, independence, loss and possibility.
These are not stories that fit neatly into ideas of vulnerability, dependence or resilience. They are stories of lives continually being worked out—through choice and circumstance, what can be changed and what cannot.
