Founded in 1952, Compassion is a leading Christian child development ministry committed to releasing children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty in Jesus’ name. To do this, Compassion partners with 8,500+ churches in more than 25 countries around the world to deliver our holistic child development programme. Every child born into poverty faces a unique combination of challenges. That’s why our programme doesn’t just care for one area of a child’s life, giving them food or education in isolation, for example. Instead, our holistic child development programme empowers a child to overcome poverty in every area of their lives. We believe caring for a child’s mind, body, heart and spirit is the most effective way to release them from poverty, for good! We are Christ-centred: We believe that the Church is the hope of the world. We run our programmes in exclusive partnership with more than 8,500 local churches because they know their communities inside out. We’re church-based: Jesus is at the heart of what we do. Our programmes show God’s love for children born into extreme poverty. Whilst Christ’s love motivates us, we help children and families from all backgrounds, regardless of belief. We’re child-focused: We intentionally focus on caring for children most vulnerable to the devastating effects of poverty. All Compassion graduates, and all full of hope that poverty in Africa can end. We heard from them at the first ever Compassion Alumni Africa Leaders' Summit in Kampala.

Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a day at the very heart of our mission. Through local churches, we walk with children for the long haul, releasing them from poverty in Jesus' name.

What does “for such a time as this” look like today? This International Day of the Girl Child, we’re celebrating girls who are courageously using their voices to create change in their communities.

Just like Queen Esther, who was called to stand up for justice at a crucial moment, Mohana is standing up against child marriage so that other girls can enjoy the freedom, education, and opportunities they deserve.

Mohana, 17, grew up in a tribal community experiencing poverty in Bangladesh. Today, she’s helping raise awareness about the harmful practice of child marriage and the risks it poses to girls’ health, education and future opportunities.

As part of her advocacy, Mohana creates staged bridal photoshoots to spark conversations and help others understand the impact of early marriage. This is not a real wedding, but a powerful act of raising awareness.

History in the making.

This week, Justin Dowds, CEO of Compassion UK & Ireland, is in Kampala, Uganda, joining young leaders at the first-ever Compassion Africa Alumni Summit.

What makes this moment so remarkable isn't simply that they're meeting together. It's who they are.

Young leaders from eight African nations have gathered to dream, collaborate and make plans for how they can help shape the future of their nations and the African continent.

Each of these leaders was once a child facing poverty. Many lacked access to opportunities, education, healthcare or the resources needed to thrive. Today, they are entrepreneurs, pastors, professionals, community leaders and changemakers helping transform communities across Africa.

Together, they're building a bold vision to mobilise 250,000 Compassion alumni across Africa by 2035, unleashing their collective influence for generations to come.

A phrase that has echoed throughout the Summit is: "Blessed to be a blessing."

What a privilege to witness this historic gathering and to see what happens when children once robbed of opportunity become leaders who are now helping others thrive.

The stories in this room are extraordinary. The impact that flows from it could shape communities, nations and continents for generations.

For these graduates, the mission against poverty continues 🌍

This week, Compassion graduates from eight African nations are in Kampala, Uganda, for the first-ever Compassion Alumni Africa Leaders' Summit.

Now leaders, entrepreneurs, pastors and professionals, they initiated and are leading it themselves.

What’s their goal? To mobilise 250,000 fellow graduates to bring even more change to their communities and nations by 2035.

You might notice some beautiful drawings at your next Compassion event or while you scroll through our content. There’s a story behind them that you’ll want to hear. 🎨

We invited children registered at Compassion projects around the world to draw their lives, hopes and neighbourhoods. The result? Over 5,000 drawings, each one alive with colour, creativity and story.

These were expressions of childhood. Joyful, bold, playful. Sometimes messy. Always meaningful.

With love and care, these artworks have been translated into a new global illustration library, reflecting that children are at the heart of all we do.
