Well, this was a lovely Friday surprise! Thanks to at Storylane PR and at The Irish Times.

Project Children: The Legacy has been featured in The Irish Times, telling the story of the extraordinary initiative that brought more than 23,000 Catholic and Protestant children from Northern Ireland to the United States during the Troubles.

After more than four years of research, interviews and gathering photographs, it means so much to see the book and, most importantly, the voices of the children, parents, volunteers and American host families who lived this remarkable story, recognised in this way.

The book will be launched at Monaghan Peace Campus on 13 October, followed by Belfast on 14 October and Derry on 15 October, 2026.

Thank you to The Irish Times for helping us preserve and share the legacy of Project Children.

What does a 50-year legacy sound like?

As we count down to the book launch of Project Children: The Legacy on October 13, we're sharing moments that capture the heart of this remarkable story.

Written by Jane Buckley, Project Children: The Legacy chronicles five decades of friendship, hope, and lives forever changed through an initiative that touched thousands of families across Ireland and America.

We were honoured by this special performance from Music Generation Cavan / Monaghan and composer Michael Rooney, whose original piece was performed at the opening of the Project Children exhibition at the Monaghan Peace Campus last October. The composition celebrates a legacy of compassion, connection, and opportunity that continues to inspire generations.

I met with Kevin Brady recently (pictured on the right), one of the very first children who travelled to America as part of the Project Children programme way back in 1975.

We got talking about growing up during the Troubles and how, no matter how many years you've lived away or where life takes you, there's a strange feeling when you walk back through the streets where you grew up. In many ways, you become that child again.

You can spend decades building a life elsewhere, yet find yourself standing on a street and instantly remember how it felt to be there all those years ago. There are areas you avoided as a child that can still bring old fears back to the surface. I'm still amazed after all this time that you feel out of sorts, and before long, I'm looking for the quickest way out.

A message to the generations coming behind us. Embrace the freedom and safety you have. Please, never take it for granted.

Many children grew up against a backdrop of bomb scares, shootings, army checkpoints and fear. Thankfully, today's young people don't know that life, and long may that continue.

Kevin, it was a delight to meet you, and I look forward to hearing your story in your own words.

The legacy of Project Children continues through the cultural partnership between Monaghan County Council and Project Children

Cathaoirleach Cllr Aidan Campbell and Chief Executive Robert Burns, join Mulcahy Scholars at@Monaghan Peace Campus to announce a special autumn programme of events that will continue to share the stories, friendships and spirit of understanding at the heart of Project Children.

Highlights include the launch of a new Project Children book, cultural events, documentary screenings, exhibition tours and community gatherings.

The programme builds on the success of The Project Children Stories exhibition and permanent archive at Monaghan County Museum, ensuring that this remarkable legacy continues to inspire future generations.

This past weekend, Project Children brought together host families, former participants, supporters, and friends from across Colorado for a series of special events celebrating the enduring legacy of a program that has touched thousands of lives.

From the moving tree planting and bench unveiling ceremony honoring the impact of Project Children in Broomfield, to the Project Children Documentary screening that reunited families and participants spanning generations, the weekend was a powerful reminder of the friendships, opportunities, and lasting connections that grew from a simple idea over 50 years ago.

A heartfelt thank you to our Colorado Coordinator, Anthony Massey, for organizing an outstanding weekend of events, and to all the host families and supporters who continue to keep the Project Children spirit alive. It was particularly special to have Denis Mulcahy, Co-Founder and Chairman of Project Children, attend with his son, Denis Jr., where they enjoyed reconnecting with so many of the families who have been part of this remarkable journey. They were also thrilled to meet two of the interns currently in the US on the Project Children Intern Program working with Habitat for Humanity.

As we look ahead to the partnered launch of Project Children: The Legacy book with Monaghan County Council on Tuesday October 13 at the Monaghan Peace Campus, this weekend served as a powerful reminder of why these stories matter.

Written by Jane Buckley Oakleaf Press, the book captures the remarkable journey of Project Children and the countless lives transformed through the generosity of host families across America.

☘️ Our 2026 Mulcahy Scholars are making the most of their summer in Ireland! ☘️

Since arriving on July 12, the scholars have been based at the Celtic Irish American Academy in Galway, enjoying a jam packed schedule of classes, cultural activities, enterprise visits, new friendships, and plenty of opportunities to experience Irish life firsthand.

Yesterday, the group travelled to Monaghan, where they were welcomed by the curator of Monaghan County Museum, Liam Bradley who gave them a tour of the Project Children Stories exhibition at the Monaghan Peace Campus. Through the exhibition, the scholars learned about the unique history of Project Children and the enduring cultural partnership between our organisations, rooted in peace, understanding, and community leadership.

The scholars also had the opportunity to meet Cathaoirleach of Monaghan, Cllr. Aidan Campbell and Chief Executive Robert Burns, who stopped by to say hello during the visit.

And perhaps most surprising of all... they've been in Ireland for more than a week and have somehow managed to dodge the rain! ☀️

We look forward to sharing more highlights from their Irish adventure in the weeks ahead as they continue their journey across Ireland and as we build towards the official launch of Project Children: The Legacy at the Monaghan Peace Campus on 13 October. 🇮🇪🇺🇸

Grateful for a powerful day in New York City this week with our Mulcahy Scholars. 🙏

From a roundtable with Irish Ambassador to the United Nations, Fergal Mythen to an insider’s tour with Ireland Mission's Comms Lead, Aisling McDonagh, followed by a second roundtable with the Consul General of Ireland, Gerald Angley and Vice Consul General Deniz Ozturk at Consulate General of Ireland, New York.

Watching the scholars step into these rooms, ask questions, and hold their own really reminds you what this program is all about. Exposure, confidence, and a reminder that these future leaders belong in these spaces.

Grateful to everyone who made it happen and who dedicated their time to inspire them before their upcoming trip to Ireland, where they’ll take part in a fully immersive cultural program at the Celtic Irish American Academy. 🇮🇪🇺🇸
