On the 20th of June 2026 Community Garda John Monaghan of Claremorris Garda Station is partaking in a charity cycle in memory of Saoirse Duggan a 3 year old girl from Spotfield, Bekan, Claremorris who unfortunately passed away in June 2025 having bravely borne leukaemia for a period of time. The charity event has been named “Saoirse’s Sunshine Cycle”.

Saoirse was an Honorary Garda in Little Blue Heroes and was John’s little blue buddy. John has chosen to raise funds for Little Blue Heroes which is a charity An Garda Síochána is affiliated to. Little Blue Heroes supports families of children with serious illness in Ireland.

The event John is doing on the 20th of June 2026marks the one year anniversary of Saoirse’s passing. It is an international event called “Chase the Sun”. John will start his cycle at sunrise (04.45hrs) from Belfast and he has to chase the sun for the day and arrive in Enniscrone by sunset (22.15hrs). This will be a total of 340km.

Hot temperatures can significantly impact the life and performance of defibrillator batteries. Extreme temperatures, can affect the electrode pad gel, rendering the pads unusable. Extreme heat can also damage the internal components of a defibrillator, leading to malfunctions or complete failure.
Please check the storage condition of your AEDs, whether in your car, storage cabinet, dressing room or building. Check manufacturer's recommendations for more information.

The recent good weather has meant farmers are busy, and unfortunately increased farming activity leads to an increase in accidents.

Take care and stay safe.

Community First Responders can make a life-saving difference in the first vital minutes before an ambulance arrives.

Claremorris South Responder Group is currently seeking new volunteers to join its local responder team.

As a Community First Responder, you could be trained to attend emergencies such as cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke or choking in your local area. Volunteers help stabilise patients, provide CPR and use defibrillators until ambulance crews arrive on scene.

No previous experience is required. Full certified training will be provided, along with safety apparel, ID cards, supplies and access to the responder app. Volunteers will also benefit from ongoing monthly training, opportunities to progress to higher levels, visit the National Emergency Operations Centre and attend the annual CFR conference.

This is a unique opportunity to learn life-saving skills, support your local community and become part of a dedicated team making a real difference when it matters most.

If you think you might be interested in joining, register your interest at: https://www.i-vol.ie/volunteer-opportunity/?ID=a00WS00000U8ebj or contact Mayo Volunteer Centre on 096 71444 or by email: [email protected]
