Archbishop Martin Reflects on World Bishops' Meeting in Rome 🇻🇦☘️

Gathered with Pope Leo XIV and Church leaders from around the world, delegates reflected on both the beauty and the fragility of family life today.

Key themes included:

🔹 Rising challenges: Falling marriage and birth rates, domestic violence, addiction, and the strains of the digital age on relationships.

🔹 A mission of mercy: The Church must accompany families with empathy, support and compassion rather than judgment, especially in times of crisis, separation or divorce.

🔹 Real human connection: The family remains an irreplaceable foundation for human dignity, genuine connection and faith in an increasingly artificial world.

The Church is calling for stronger support networks to nurture and protect families, both in Ireland and across the globe.

“Families need the Church to show mercy, empathy, compassion and an understanding of their brokenness - not rejection or judgement - and this especially includes those whose relationships have broken down through separation and divorce.

The Church is called to be a voice of love and encouragement, a Mother Church, who recognises the enormous pressures on her families. At the same time, people look to the Church to offer stable stepping stones to help the children and young people of today find solid footholds amidst the many other confusing and complicated pathways offered them by society and the surrounding screen culture.”

Fr Willie Doyle Sainthood cause Moves to Roman Stage
Bishop Tom Deenihan presided over sung Vespers at Mullingar Cathedral on Sunday for the closing of the Irish phase of the Diocesan Inquiry of the Cause for the Beatification and Canonisation of the Servant of God Father Willie Doyle SJ, in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar, Diocese of Meath. The documentation and evidence will now be sent to the Dicastery for the Causes of the Saints in Rome.
The ceremony brought together family members, parishioners, fifteen bishops from throughout Ireland, and representatives of: other Christian denominations, military personnel from Ireland and England, the British government, clergy including members of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order) and from Clongowes Wood SJ in Co Kildare, where Father Doyle taught for a time. National Synodal Assembly proposals to inform future of Church life in Ireland
Over 300 delegates from across Ireland gathered at Gormanston for the Irish National Synodal Assembly, marking a major milestone in the Catholic Church’s renewal journey initiated in 2021.
Representing lay, clerical, and religious communities, delegates met for prayer and discernment to address a central question: “What does God want from the Church in Ireland at this time?”
Guided by seven key priority areas—belonging, co-responsibility and lay ministry, family, formation and catechesis, healing, women, and youth—the assembly evaluated 35 practical proposals organized under five broader pathways.
Church leadership emphasized that these recommendations, now passed to the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, must inspire tangible action at parish level.
Assembly Chairperson Fr. Declan Hurley described synodality as an ongoing journey of growth and conversion. Delegates echoed a strong hunger for change, calling for urgent progress in healing, inclusion, and the accompaniment of young people.

During today’s Angelus, Pope Leo XIV thanked everyone who prayed for him during his recovery, expressing special gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Gemelli Hospital.
He said the experience brought him closer to those facing illness and infirmity and that he will gradually resume his activities “with God’s help and your prayers.”
We continue to pray for Pope Leo XIV’s recovery and all those who are sick.

The Vatican has released the first post-surgery photos of Pope Leo XIV as he continues to recover at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

In a new medical update, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora said blood tests and a chest X-ray conducted this morning “confirmed continued improvement in his overall condition.”

“His post-operative recovery has progressed to the point that he can carry out normal daily activities completely independently,” the doctors added.

The Pope also celebrated Mass at the hospital and personally distributed Holy Communion.

Pope Leo is scheduled to pray the Angelus on Sunday, although the location has not yet been confirmed.

Fr Willie Doyle Cause for Sainthood Progresses to Rome
This Sunday at 4.00pm in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar, the closing of the diocesan process for the cause of canonisation of Father Willie Doyle SJ, will take place after the celebration of sung Vespers presided over by Bishop Tom Deenihan, Bishop of Meath. The cause was opened in 2022.
Fr Willie Doyle was an Irish Jesuit chaplain serving in WWI who was killed in action in Passchendaele in 1917 while ministering to two Protestant soldiers stranded in no-man’s land.
Fr Willie was highly respected and regarded by fellow soldiers to whom he ministered irrespective of their faith or background.
One member of the Orange Order serving in the 36th Ulster Division said of Fr Willie, “Fr. Doyle was a good deal among us. We couldn’t possibly agree with his religious opinion, but we simply worshipped him for other things. He didn’t know the meaning of fear, and he didn’t know what bigotry was. He was as ready to risk his life to take a drop of water to a wounded Ulsterman as to assist men of his own faith and regiment. If he risked his life in looking after Ulster Protestant soldiers once, he did it a hundred times in the last few days…The Ulstermen felt his loss more keenly than anybody, and none were readier to show their marks of respect to the dead hero priest than were our Ulster Presbyterians.” Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference Father Willie Doyle Association
