The timeline of grief is rarely straightforward. Grief is deeply personal, and every child experiences it differently. For children, it can feel like a roller coaster of emotions as they adjust to a new way of life. They may experience feelings of anger, guilt, sadness, confusion, or even numbness.
Just as with adults, grief often comes in waves. Certain events, memories, or milestones can trigger emotions and bring unexpected feelings to the surface. On days when they feel happy or enjoy themselves, children may also experience guilt, as though they should not be having a good time.
It is important for children to understand that all of these emotions are normal. Grief is not a linear journey, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve.
The Children’s Grief Centre is here to support, listen to, and help children and young people as they navigate their grief. 💜
