Recently on the 30th of May, we celebrated 🥔 Happy International Day of the Potato🥔
Did you know?
✅ There are over 5,000 varieties of potato, making it one of the world’s most resilient and sustainable food crops.
✅ Potatoes are grown in 159 countries, feeding millions of people every day.
✅ Potatoes are naturally fat-free, rich in vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates, and provide many of the essential nutrients needed for human survival.
✅ Potatoes have even been successfully grown in space — proving their importance for future food security on Earth and beyond!
🌍 The potato remains one of the world’s most important food crops, providing a reliable, affordable and nutritious source of food for billions of people.
🇮🇪 Ireland has also played a significant role in supporting food security through humanitarian aid.
Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Project Espwa, working alongside generous partners including Country Crest, Keogh’s Farm, and The Seed Potato Company, has helped facilitate the donation and distribution of more than 125 tonnes of Irish potatoes and fresh produce to vulnerable communities affected by conflict.
🚛 Thousands of families have benefited from these donations, with potatoes providing a nutritious, versatile and culturally familiar staple food during a time of immense hardship.
The support has included:
🥔 Fresh Irish potatoes
🥕 Root vegetables and seasonal produce
🚚 Humanitarian transport and logistics support
🤝 Partnerships between Irish growers, charities and community organisations
From Irish fields to families in need, these donations demonstrate how a simple crop can have an extraordinary impact — feeding families, reducing food waste, supporting communities and bringing hope during challenging times.
The potato may be humble, but its impact is global.
Today, we at Project Espwa celebrate the farmers, growers, food producers, volunteers and aid workers who help ensure nutritious food reaches those who need it most.
A special thank you to Country Crest, Keogh’s Farm, and The Seed Potato Company for their continued generosity and support of humanitarian aid efforts.
Go, Potato! 🇮🇪🥔🌍
