MyIreland Too Virgin Documentary on Migrant Youth (IPAS residents)

A new documentary series airing on Virgin Media One spotlights the work of Cork Migrant Centre at Nano Nagle Place through the lives of a group of young people who are navigating the challenges and opportunities of growing up in modern Ireland.

As a psychosocial hub where cultures meet, stories are shared, and belonging is built, Cork Migrant Centre mentors and empowers through the Sauti Youth group. By supporting young migrants alleviate their day to day stress by expressing themselves creatively, Sauti helps them to celebrate their identities, channel their experiences and enrich their communities through music, poetry, comedy and sport - all while navigating the ups and downs of being a teenager in 21st century Ireland.

Throughout the series, we meet:

Tamer who works at his family’s café in Macroom and bosses the mic with his spoken word

Farhan who uses poetry to get clarity and create conversation

Saheed who got a baptism of fire when he moved to Cork’s Northside and now mines his experiences for laughs as an aspiring comedian (while his mam badgers him to get a proper job)

Raphael whose childhood experience of immigration means he’s well placed to empathise with the ‘Sauti Youth’ in his roles as mentor

Fionnuala, whose leans into the spirit of her homeland to help people heal in the community instead of trying to do it in isolation

Naomi, Part-time Programme Manager at Cork Migrant Centre, Cork, Part-time Community Development Worker at the HSE Migrant Health Hub, and Part-time Lecturer at UCC. Naomi uses her experience as a migrant and her expertise in non-western psychology to address the social determinants of health within an evidence based psychosocial framework to alleviate the day to day stress related to the social, physical, emotional and cognitive development of migrant youth and families.

My Ireland Too is a 3 part documentary that begins on VMTV One on Wednesday August 19th at 9pm and the next 2 consecutive Wednesdays.

We are excited to be celebrating Heritage Week with our friends at Cork Public Museum. Our new exhibition on the 19th August will celebrate the Traveller heritage of the Black Ash & Spring Lane Areas of Cork city. Memories of life on the road and barreltop wagons are celebrated through collaged photos created by Traveller women working with artist Tom Doig. The artwork is linked to a website with more information on this part of Cork history. Women who were involved in this oral history project share their memories and oral histories.
