Our Club recently was honoured to attend and provide sponsorship for a Community Family Fun day on the grounds of the Wilton SMA Church facilities in Bishopstown.
Our President Jim O Connor and Club members met those attending and explained what we do and our future plans for 2026/27. It is hoped that we may recruit new members from our attendance at this local event.
This event has been taking place for some years and this was our first invitation to participate. Our President has congratulated the voluntary team for for organising such a successful event and thanked them for our invitation to participate.

Our Club has been collecting used spectacles from various pharmacies and opticians over the years. These are consigned to sister Clubs in Africa who will remodel, upgrade and make them fit for reuse.
We recently consigned over 1000 used spectacles to a designated centre in France for onward transfer via DPD Couriers. We are honoured to be part of this international Lions Club initiative called 'Lions For Sight' scheme which will not only assist those in need but also reduce waste to landfill.
Our Club wishes to thank all those outlets and shops who have participated in this worthwhile initiative.

Bishopstown Lions Club is delighted to participate in this community event on Sunday 13th September at SMA Hall Wilton. Lions Club members will be available at our stand to outline how we continue to benefit our local community as we have done over the past 35 years. We welcome anyone who may wish to find out more infromation or perhaps becoming a member of our club which is based in Aras Leon, Murphys Farm Bishopstown.

Four large food beds were constructed at the rear of Aras Leon in late June by Bishopstown Lions Club and Bishopstown Tidy Town under the watchful eye of JJ Healy.

These beds were planted with herbs and vegetables as part of the GIY initiative by our Club. The produce of the beds have now reached maturity.
JJ who is in charge of the MTU Catering Department demonstrated his skill by holding an outdoor cookery demonstration using some of this bounty and serving a beautiful meal to those in attendance from the Lions Club and the residents of Aras Leon. This GIY initiated further highlights how our Club is reducing its Carbon footprint in the community .
Jean Downey of Bishopstown Lions Club has been the initiator of this project and must be commended for bringing this to completion. These food bed will be a source of organic vegetables and herbs for the residents of Aras Leon in the long term

Bishopstown and District Lions Club has been embarking on a journey of reducing the carbon footprint of it's activities, events and buildings for some time.

Over the last few years we have been involved in a tree planting campaign in a micro forest, collecting used spectacles for reuse as part of the ongoing spectacle programme, various environmental education programmes for the young and not so young.

We have also improved the carbon footprint of our flagship Aras Leon 25 bed apartment block by the installation of 60 Solar Panels in 2025 and by insulating the external cavity walls in 2024. Both these projects were fully funded by the Climate Action Funds operated by Cork City Council.

Recently, we collaborated with local voluntary groups to construct 4 large food beds at the rear of Aras Leon containing tonnes of topsoil and compost. Large quantities of vegetables and herbs have been planted in these beds. These will be managed and food products will be used by the residents of Aras Leon.

It is intended that the food waste from Aras Leon will be taken for composting at a nearby domestic compost facility operated by Bishopstown Tidy Towns. The resulting compost will be reused in the local park and also in food beds following quality control protocols.

The labour intensive aspect of the construction work was coordinated by JJ Healy from MTU. As well as our Club members taking part in this work,the local Tidy Town group from Bishopstown provided volunteer support. Bishopstown Men’s Shed provided the necessary craft persons to set up the timber boxes initially. The mechanical Plant required to place the material on site was supplied by Cork Builders Provider on a pro bona basis.

Our Club and residents wish to thank everyone who assisted in bring this project to fruition.

Our Club held its AGM on 11 June at Aras Leon. The President thanked the members and volunteers for the record number of events carried out by the Club over the past year. The funds collected exceeded all previous amounts benefiting the many causes and charities. The final item on the agenda was the election of officers for 2026/2027. Our outgoing President Jim O Connor was re-elected as were his outgoing officer team; Brendan Cadogan as Secretary and Jim Costello as Treasurer. The photo shows President Jim being congratulated by those members attending the AGM.

Our inaugural Family Fun Evening was held in the bright sunshine last Friday at Murphy’s Farm Playground. The beneficiary of the donations collected from generous patrons will be Field of Dreams, Cork. There were many attractions for the children ,the Council Playground was a big attraction, kids were challenged at the Lifetime Lab Stand with Vex Robots providing the entertainment. The face painting had long queues of enthusiastic kids.

The adults were attracted to the vintage cars and the tours around the community gardens by Jean and her Bishopstown Tidy Towns Group.

In addition to the community gardens the Sustainability Theme was continued with WaterPower an Electricity supplier who generates electricity from Hydro Schemes nationwide and sells it to customers both industrial and domestic.

Another, Cork firm Clean Energy Solar who instals and commissions Solar Panels was represented by their Chief Engineer Arek. Items of Biodiversity along the nearby streams in Murphy’s Farm Regional Park were outlined by local guides.

Our Club was horoured by the attendance of the Lord Mayor Cllr Fergal Dennehy and the Lady Mayoress. The Mayoral party mingled with those attending over a two hour period in a fun atmosphere.

Minister Jerry Buttimer paid a visit to the event and stated his appreciation for all the great work carried out by our Club over the past 35 years in the Community.

The Club was delightful to welcome our local Cllr Ciara O'Connor who helped out in parking management at one stage

Our Club President thanked those who attended this inaugural event and who helped to make it so enjoyable. He said that Cork City Council were very helpful in making the venue available and in particular Mr.Steven Scully of the Parks Department. He thanked all the volunteers from the Lions Club and the Tidy Towns who helped in many ways to make the event a success.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Fergal Dennehy recently invited our Club to a Civic Reception in the City Hall Chamber.
The Lord Mayor was fulsome in his praise for the great work that have been carried out by the Club over the past 35 years, not only our contribution to charitable enterprises but also to various environmental projects and engagement with schools in our community.

The President in response thanked the Lord Mayor for his invitation and his kind words. He highlighted the various joint initiatives carried out with the Council including the annual Easter Egg Hunt, which raises funds for local schools, the association with the Council 20 years ago which enabled the construction of the 25 bed apartment building (Aras Leon) and indeed recent Climate Action Fund initiatives.

Following the formalities, the Lord Mayor took the Club members on a tour of the Lord Mayors Room and Offices as well as the Council Chamber itself. He outlined the long History of the Office of Lord Mayor, the Ceremonial Chain and many other ceremonial items of great historical significance.
