This International Day of Co-operatives, we are sharing some of the stories of Student Housing Co-ops from around the world 🌍

Behind every student housing co-op is a group of passionate young people who decided that affordable, not-for-profit and community-driven housing isn’t just a dream... it can be a reality.

From Cork to California, Seoul to São Paulo, students are:

🛠️ Building their own housing solutions

🗳️ Making decisions together (1 member: 1 vote)

🤝 Following the co-operative principles

🌱 Living sustainably and affordably

🌍✨ Day 2 Highlights from Geneva! ✨🌍 (part 1)

AJ & Isabel from Cork Student Housing Cooperative spent an inspiring day exploring cooperative housing in Geneva, organised by urbaMonde in collaboration with La Ciguë, CODHA, and Equilibre. They visited three remarkable housing cooperatives in the Eco-neighbourhood of Les Vergers de Meyrin.

🏠 La Ciguë: This independent, student-focused cooperative has been creating low-cost community housing since 1986. It emphasized self-management, sustainability, and bringing students together in an eco-friendly environment. La Ciguë has other buildings around Geneva but this one is just for students! They have a bike repair shop, bike storage, communal event spaces, vegetable gardens and a children's play area💚

🏢 CODHA: Founded in 1994, CODHA has redefined affordable housing with a focus on participation, solidarity, and a higher quality of life. With over 750 housing units already built and more on the way, it continues to set a new standard for community living! Codha really highlights what a building can be when it's run by the people living there - they have BBQ spaces, vegetable gardens on balconies, rock climbing walls, arcade room, a gym, guest rooms and more! This fosters such a sense of community 🤝

🌱 Equilibre: Since 2005, Equilibre has promoted sustainable living through collective planning and eco-conscious construction. By prioritizing shared spaces and social diversity, it has built stronger, more connected communities. Currently Equilibre are trialing compostable toilets and different families have volunteered to use them! They use the compost for the gardens and urine to create fertiliser! 🌿

These visits also included insightful discussions with residents and co-op representatives, offering a deeper look into the technical, architectural, and day-to-day aspects of cooperative living.

We left inspired by the innovative approaches and community spirit they encountered in Geneva. Stay tuned for more updates on how they plan to bring these ideas back to Cork Student Housing Cooperative! 💬🏡

Day 1 from Isabel & AJ's trip to Geneva for the Pan European Student Co-operative Housing Meeting 🇨🇭 We met Matthew, a student from Trinity who is hoping to set up a student housing co-op for Dublin, see first pic!!

Then we met the new committee of Belfast Student Housing Co-op (Jess, Ben & Saj) along with representatives (Niamh & Bryan) from NUS-USI who hope to advocate for student cooperative housing to student unions across Ireland 🇮🇪

Our first night involved a social on a beautiful 19th Century steam boat in the heart of Geneva, c'était incroyable! 🚢

We will share more from this inspiring trip over the next few weeks, stay tuned!

Thank you to Cooperative Housing Ireland
