BWI PeregrineCam - Day 18 on the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. The chicks continue to grow bigger by the day. They are also becoming more active on the nesting platform and if you look very closely you can just make out the beginnings of their first set of dark feathers starting to grow.

BWI PeregrineCam - Day 16 on the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. As the chicks grow bigger the parents don't brood (sit on) them so much. Here the male does some stretching exercises while keeping a watch on the young ones who are making hissing sounds now and then.

BWI PeregrineCam - Day 14 on the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. When one of the parents returns with food they usually greet each other with very loud shrieking calls, which can be heard at quite a distance from the Cathedral. You might also be able to hear the wheezing begging calls of the chicks.

BWI PeregrineCam - Day 12 on the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. The chicks are getting bigger by the day and more vocal too. It's a hard fact of life for peregrine chicks. Unlike garden birds they hatch on different days so one is bigger than the other. If there is enough food both should survive but this way, if not there is a better chance that one will.

BWI PeregrineCam - Day 10 on the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. The rapidly growing chicks are not able to control their body temperature yet so the adults have to sit on them (brood). As the chicks grow this is becoming more difficult to do, especially for the male, who is smaller than the female. Today the peregrines had front seats at one of a regular series of Sunday carillon recitals in the Cathedral, this time by carillonneur Oisín Dilger :-)

WATCH TO THE END! - Keeping the nest clean is vital for the survival of the chicks. Here Mom demonstrates how to do it as she answers the call of nature at 3:53am. You rarely see peregrines reversing :-) We will post a chick update this this evening.

BWI PeregrineCam - Day 6 on the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. Mom feeding the two hungry chicks this morning. Both parents share all duties. The high winds, 61 metres up, occasionally causes image distortion, not to mention noise on the microphone.

BWI PeregrineCam - Day 4 on the spire of St. Colman's Cathedral in Cobh. The first chick hatched four days ago and while the two chicks are looks good we feel the chances of the other two hatching at this stage are slim. While peregrine falcons typically lay 3-4 eggs, it is common for at least one to not hatch, with an overall egg failure rate commonly cited around 10% or higher, depending on the population, environmental factors, and parental age. This is normal, often due to infertility, developmental issues, or thin shells.
