A new ECON prospective member organization: Phiren Amenca International Network

For more than 25 years, Phiren Amenca has been a transnational Roma youth network working across Europe and beyond. They support Roma young people to lead change and build the futures they deserve.

Phiren Amenca grew was launched in 2000. Over a decade it grew into an international network connecting Roma and non-Roma youth across Central, Eastern and Western Europe. Since 2014 Phiren Amenca has been a registered international non-profit association based in Brussels.

Phiren Amenca creates trusted spaces where Roma youth connect, learn and grow as leaders, advocates and knowledge producers. Through dialogue, mobility and collective action, they bridge Roma and non-Roma communities to challenge antigypsyism, strengthen solidarity and open pathways into civic life, employment and political decision-making.

Phiren Amenca's work sits at the intersection of grassroots organizing and institutional advocacy. They link communities directly affected by antigypsyism to the spaces where decisions about their futures are made, and they do this through a European network built on solidarity between Roma and non-Roma partners. With the vision of a world where Roma youth lead change, shape the decisions that affect their lives, and are recognised as powerful agents of justice and knowledge.

How can we develop learning on nonviolent action, build coalitions, and maintain strict operational security while organizing under political pressure?

In our latest Organizers' Kitchen session hosted by Daniel from Freie Ungarische Botschaft, community organizers gathered to explore nonviolent resistance, coalition building, and safety protocols for movements operating in challenging environments. The discussion led into sharing insights on listening to shared self-interests when forming alliances, switching to secure communication platforms, and building trust. A key highlight from participants: "Be proactive, not reactive: don’t wait for it to be urgent to start building coalitions, by then it's often too late already."

A huge thank you to everyone who brought their insights to the table. Let’s keep cooking up people power together!

Our Organizing Coordinator, Céline Lebrun Shaath, recently joined ECON's member organization CATU Ireland Summer School.

CATU continues to model what grounded, member-led community and tenant organizing looks like in practice. Over several days of exchanges, we connected with local organizers across Ireland to see their local campaigns, member development, and education work in action, and built links with allied groups and community organizers on the ground.

Cross-border solidarity is built through shared struggle and deep relationships. Huge gratitude to CATU for the warm hospitality, and we wish the entire team, local branches, and partner organizations continued strength and success in their upcoming campaigns!

Most groups do not fail because of repression or having the wrong ideology or the wrong strategy, although we acknowledge these are important aspects in every group. And how collectives (be they an institutionalized NGO or an informal grassroots collective) manage and take care of power dynamics within their organization is the main determinant of the health of a group.

This is why this course focuses on individual and group level of the systemic nature of how we get disempowered, about exclusion mechanisms, support mechanism skillsets and about making power dynamics visible and moveable.

This program offers a deep dive into the systemic nature of exclusion and disempowerment, providing tools for meaningful intervention at both the individual and collective levels. Rather than offering "quick-fix" solutions, colleagues facilitate a space for profound exploration, mutual learning, and the dismantling of internalized patterns that often disrupt our communities.

Are your campaigns stuck in endless firefighting mode?

Across Europe, social movements and community organizers face a shared set of roadblocks: fragmentation across issues, burnout, tactical repetition, and a lack of long-term strategic reflection.

To tackle this, in 2024, ECON teamed up with Ulex Project, European Alternatives, and Maynooth University developed the "Movement Learning Catalyst: A Guide to Learning for Systemic Change."

Here are 4 key frameworks from the guide every organizer should know:
1️⃣ The Movement Ecology Framework: Why diversity across symbiotic, interstitial, and ruptural strategies is essential for systemic impact.
2️⃣ Translocal Power Mapping: How to build bottom-up solidarity across borders to counter global capital and Fortress Europe.
3️⃣ Critical Pathways: Replacing "magical thinking" with systemic condition-mapping in your strategy cycles.
4️⃣ Radical Popular Education: Turning day-to-day activist experience into a durable "infrastructure of dissent."

On July 30, we hosted an online training focusing on Coaching & Leadership Development, led by trainers Masha Burina and Céline Lebrun Shaath for our members.

Community organizers from across Europe gathered to explore coaching as a core organizing tool tailored to drawing out inner potential rather than simply giving advice. Participants practiced the 5-step coaching framework (Observe, Diagnose, Intervene, Debrief, Follow-Up) and learned to diagnose leadership challenges across strategy (Head), motivation (Heart), and ex*****on (Hands).

Building on this momentum, ECON is excited to launch its Coaching Partners Pilot & Coaching Clinic for members to strengthen leadership capacity and network relationships across ECON.
