Penny Marathon

Penny Marathon An event that raises awareness of the plight of suffering animals and celebrates their rescuers. Years later ... we're still here!
(232)

In July 2012, a handful of passionate animal lovers ran and cycled from Marathon to Athens in Greece on the hottest day of summer. The point was to raise awareness of the plight of stray, abused and neglected cats and dogs in Greece. Encouraged by the experience, the 42 kilometre run – known as the Penny Marathon (named after a Greek stray dog whose life was cut short) – has become an annual event

with teams now running, cycling and walking in cities around the world, all on the same day in July. In addition to raising awareness of the plight of suffering animals, the Penny Marathon is a way to honour the work of volunteers who step up – where inhumane or apathetic systems fail – to save the lives of these animals. The Penny Marathon is a registered charity in Australia and Europe. It operates on 100% volunteer power.

Vale Dr Mu’ath Abj Rakba, dedicated veterinarian from Gaza and member of Sulala Animal Rescue. In his memory, we have raised and donated $3,000 via Animals Australia, who are subsidising the shelter’s work during this abhorrent war.

We extend our condolences to those who knew and loved Dr Rakba

With great sadness, the Jane Goodall Institute confirmed this morning the passing of the organization’s founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, age 91 who died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles, CA for her speaking tour in the United States.

Dr. Goodall’s life and work not only made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, but also of humankind and the environments we all share. She inspired curiosity, hope and compassion in countless people around the world, and paved the way for many others — particularly young people who gave her hope for the future.

In 1960 Dr. Goodall established the longest running wild chimpanzee study in Gombe National Park, Tanzania which continues to this day. She pioneered and sustained the Jane Goodall Institute’s community-centered conservation initiatives across the chimpanzee range for over four decades. Her legacy includes the creation of JGI’s international environmental and humanitarian youth program Roots & Shoots, which is actively driving change in 75 countries and counting around the world.

The Jane Goodall Institute is incredibly grateful to all our supporters, partners, and friends, especially during this difficult time. To add a personal remembrance of Dr. Goodall and continue her legacy for future generations, please visit JaneGoodall.org/RememberingJane

"We are deeply grateful to Penny Marathon and its coordinator, Rach Cassar, for the generous donation of pet food, collected through the kindness of the participants in this year’s Penny Marathon. These supplies are not just needed—they are essential for the animals in our care, and this support gives us the strength to continue."

Rest in peace, Oscar. I’m sorry the world gave you more suffering than joy. But it brought you Anna Makri, your rescuer. May your adventure through the cosmos bring enlightenment. Until we meet again…

The team at Empty the Cages Athens
will be at the 14th Penny Marathon tomorow. This time, with two rescued stray dogs available for adoption: Irma and Hermes, who are approximately 10–11 years old and were rescued from an illegal hunter.

The reason they're running is for Oscar, another stray, who is currently living at the same shelter and battling cancer.

The two Pointers are Irma and Hermes, and the white shepherd is Oscar.

Open your heart and home to these dogs! They deserve to live a few years free of suffering, surrounded by love. Contact the team!
