State of Concept Athens

State of Concept Athens A contemporary art institution promoting socially and politically engaged practices since 2013 -

⚡️Our physical space in Athens is CLOSED

It is an independent platform that fosters the appreciation for local and international contemporary art and the growth of artistic and curatorial practice. State of Concept hosts exhibitions, public programs, events and workshops, and offers free one-to-one tutorials to artists and students throughout the year. It has been collaborating with
institutions abroad, with exhibitions and other parts o

f our program traveling to Amsterdam, Auckland, Ljubljana, New York, Paris, Rotterdam, among other places. Operating as a bridge between Athens and the international contemporary art scene, our interest is to bring to the fore artistic and curatorial practices that address and question the current
social, economic and political phenomena of Europe and beyond. We do so by looking into these thematics from the location of Greece, existing literally and metaphorically on the borders of West and East. Living still through a financial crisis that has altered its societal fibre, the country remains an urgent location from where cultural practitioners can rethink the Western canon and its constructs.

💣🌹💣

The exhibition explores the archetype of the dangerous woman - femininity that threatens patriarchy, imitating its violent means and tools in the effort of self-determination, salvation and emancipation.

The title refers to Alexandros Papadiamantis’ landmark book “The Murderess” of 1903, one of the most important novels of Greek literature and perhaps an interesting challenge for the feminist reading of patriarchy.

In the exhibition you will find narratives of violence, spells, s*xual practices, caustic campaigns, medical trolley tables, and hybrid creatures that make us rethink the gender stereotypes that are reproduced not only in society but also in science.

⚡️🪼MEET THE ARTISTS OF MURDERESSES 🪸🫧

This week we are happy to present you the video installation As they were drifting away, their bodies turned into waves (2021) by Eva Papamargariti () part of our group exhibition “Murderesses” which is on view until 16.11.2024 🩸

Feminine hybrid figures transform into water, refers to myths as well as microbial origins, that carry histories and constant exchanges, as a mechanism of survival. Approaching also the phenomenon of moulting, which specific organisms periodically remove their outer skin leaving behind a shell, as a survival mechanism - an exoskeleton - the work refers to a constant effort to find one’s identity by shedding what has been prescribed upon them, and also connotes on how to define desires within a constantly changing field of flows on a political, geological and technological level. Hers is a proposal of going beyond gender, in order to possibly escape the violences imposed on those that identify as female. As many older than Papadiamantis’s myths attempted to do, to save women by turning them into something else, Papamargariti is now proposing this fusion of identities and entities, as a right to opacity, reminiscent of the stories of women described in feminist scholar’s Saidiya Hartmann thinking.

⚡️🔮MEET THE ARTISTS OF MURDERESSES 🌞

This week we are happy to present you the sculptures from the series Wrong side of the bed (2019) & Midsummer love and softest silences, (2024) by Malvina Panagiotidi () part of our group exhibition “Murderesses” which is on view until 16.11 🩸

Malvina Panagiotidis’ sculptures examines the state of the “undead”, the condition between the living and the dead and how this characterises the entity and the role of a work of art itself. Body parts with living gestures (hands, legs etc.), made of metal, copper and nickel are placed on medical trolley tables, highlighting the in-between state. In this exhibition, it is a symbol of gender dysphoria, referring to the time and financially consuming medical and governmental protocols that individuals in s*x transition have to experience together with the discrimination and uninformed, most of the times, medical staff. But, it can also be seen as a scream for help, as femininities in general are facing cruel behaviour in already abusive situations, seeking for understanding and help in order to get out of this in-between - living and dead state.
