For the autumn and winter, Falfilm are presenting a series of comedy films known as the Ealing Comedies. These will take place monthly on Sunday afternoons and will be offered with tea and cakes or scones and jam.

The first of our Sunday afternoon films was released in 1955, and follows a group of criminals who rent rooms in the home of a sweet-natured elderly widow, claiming to be musicians preparing for a performance. In reality, they are plotting an elaborate robbery, using her house as a base for their carefully planned scheme. But as tensions grow the widow, unaware of their true intentions, treats her unusual lodgers with kindness and hospitality, creating a striking contrast between her innocent nature and their criminal ambitions.

Many twists and turn as the story unfolds combining polite British manners, desperate bungling criminals and all with wonderful Classic comedy acting from many of our finest actors of the day.
Whether you have seen this film before or not; you will enjoy the friendly atmosphere as we laugh together and enjoy home made refreshments.

For existing members then the afternoon is included free of charge, for non-members there is a small charge to become a day member.

FalFilm - Falfield Village Hall Friday 16th October @ 7:30 pm

This Friday sees the return of the Alternative Falfilm season with a showing of a masterpiece from 1960 based around one man’s flat in Upper West Side New York. It is a masterful blend of sharp satire and melancholy romance that remains a cornerstone of American cinema.

The film explores the corporate grind and moral compromise of 1960s New York City, tracking a lonely office worker who climbs the corporate ladder by lending his Upper West Side flat to company executives for their extramarital affairs. It is a brilliant, bittersweet look at loneliness, integrity, and the desire for genuine human connection in a cynical world.

The film’s enduring magic relies heavily on its two legendary lead actors. The male lead named after a citrus fruit delivers a career-defining performance as the anxious yet endearing protagonist, perfectly balancing physical comedy with deeply felt vulnerability. His portrayal anchors the story’s moral journey. Opposite him, the female lead , don’t call me ‘surely’ Big Mac life in the fast lane, shines as the sharp-witted elevator operator caught in her own complex romantic entanglements. She infuses the role with a mixture of tough resilience and heartbreak, creating a deeply sympathetic character. Together, they share an undeniable, understated chemistry that elevates the film from a corporate farce into a poignant, deeply human love story. Their performances helped secure the film five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The film runs for 2 hours, is in black and white and rated PG.

A stormy location above the land.

Set against the wild, windswept moors of Yorkshire, the film tells a dark and passionate story of love, obsession and revenge. At its heart is a troubled relationship between two people whose powerful connection is shaped by social class, separation and betrayal. The bleak landscape mirrors the characters’ intense emotions, creating a haunting atmosphere where love becomes destructive and resentment lasts for generations.

The story explores how choices made in youth can have devastating consequences later in life. Its gothic mood, dramatic scenery and emotionally charged relationships make it both tragic and unsettling, while the contrast between freedom and social expectations drives much of the conflict. a stormy location above the land.

FalFilm Friday 14th August @ 7:30pm

This Coen brothers masterpiece from 1996 is a lesson to us all that human stupidity is more terrifying than any alien construct from the multitude of films of the time which dealt with such things.

The characters are deliberately mundane, their logic, laughably thin most of the time and what drives them on are the problems of everyday life that we all face at times.

The film, despite its violence and distressing moments, all portrayed with an incredibly black humour, is a paean to the point of view that a simple quiet honest life is worth more than all the money and other things to which we ascribe such importance.

The film is not particularly graphic in its violence by the way, trusting you to understand that the worst moments don’t always require explicit depiction .

It’s a perfect start to the wonderful journey of exploring all the Coen brothers films. Don’t miss it !

Next Screening - Saturday 15th August 7:30pm

Set in a Yorkshire town during the First World War, the film follows a local choral society struggling to continue after many of its male members leave for military service. A new choirmaster takes charge and recruits teenagers and other members of the community to prepare a performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius. Against a backdrop of grief, uncertainty and social tensions, rehearsals become a way for people to escape the realities of war and preserve a sense of normal life.

The film combines gentle humour with more serious themes of loss, identity, sexuality and the importance of art during difficult times. Rather than presenting music as a simple solution to the horrors of war, it shows how singing can bring people together and offer moments of comfort and connection. Its quiet, understated style has been praised for its warmth and emotional sensitivity, although some critics felt that its many characters and storylines were not developed deeply enough.

FalFilm - Friday 24th July 7:30pm

Friday 24th July sees the second in our season of Alternative Falfilm presentations.

Run Lola Run, the acclaimed thriller directed by Tom Tykwer.

I really do have a great deal of affection for Run Lola Run, as a highly energetic and stylishly executed piece of cinema. It’s hard to think of a movie that can match the sheer intensity of the assault that the opening few moments make upon your senses, as the images flash across the screen, the heavy dance soundtrack kicks to life, and the camera dances and cuts like there’s no tomorrow.

This is the ultimate ‘What If’ movie. If you are a fan of “ The Man in the High Castle’, the fantastic sci-fi classic by Phillip K. Dick about what would have happened if the Germans had won World War II then you will love this. Although this film plays out on a smaller scale, the Monopoly board of one persons life as it were, it is none the less affecting and fascinating for all that.

The devil really is in the detail here. Watch the first 20 minutes very closely and then engage in one of cinema’s very best “Spot the difference’ games. Watch Lola engage in a game of Risk and lets see if it ends up with Ker-plunk or will you hold all the right Cluedo cards at the end.

The film is in German with sub-titles and has a running time of 77 minutes. Its short but, in my view very very sweet.
