Did you know you can see St Arildaโ€™s Church from Filnore Woods? From this viewpoint, look out across the Severn Vale and youโ€™ll find it on its hill in the distance, near Oldbury-on-Severn (where it also boasts it's own spectacular view - worth visiting!).

The church has a local legend attached. St Arilda (or Arild) is said to have lived at Kington, near Thornbury, and to have been martyred here long before the Norman Conquest.

Itโ€™s one of the little details that makes the view worth stopping for. Have you ever picked it out on a walk? Let us know in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

Thank you to everyone who came along to our work morning on Sunday. It was a productive one!

We spent the morning repairing and replacing more of the steps, and cutting new drainage ditches alongside them. The ditches carry rainwater away from the path so it doesn't wash the steps out, which will matter more as the wetter months set in.

We also cleared a fallen tree that was encroaching on the footbridge, so that route stays safe and easy to use.

It's hard work, but jobs like these keep the paths walkable for everyone who visits, whatever the weather.

Thank you to everyone who stopped to chat and thank us while we worked. It's for all you grateful people that we continue to do this in our spare time in order to keep the woodland open and accessible for all to enjoy ๐Ÿ’š

If you'd like to lend a hand, we'd love to see you at a future work morning. Keep an eye on our page for the next date!

Our next work morning is this Sunday! ๐ŸŒณ

Join us this Sunday, October 11th, 10am-12pm, meeting at the container just inside the entrance to the woodland.

If you've not come along before, here's a quick rundown:

We work with traditional hand tools. No experience or equipment needed, everything's provided

There's always plenty to do, and something suited to most ages and abilities

Wear sturdy shoes or boots and clothes you don't mind getting a bit muddy; gloves are handy if you have them, but not essential

Stay for the full two hours or just pop by for a bit. Whatever suits you!

Not sure where to find us? If it's your first time and you'd like some company to walk up, one of us will be waiting near the entrance to the Leisure Centre until 9:45am to walk up together. Just let us know beforehand if you're meeting us there.

If volunteering isn't for you, or you can't make it this time, sharing this post still helps us reach the right people ๐Ÿ™

No pressure, no experience required. We'd love to see some new faces this Sunday

Don't let the uncharacteristically warm weather and sun fool you, the woods are starting to change. Leaves and turning and beginning to fall, paths are littered with them, and that golden light creeping in a little earlier each day. It's one of the best times of year to visit Filnore Woods, with something new to spot on every walk.

Have you been up recently? We'd love to hear what you've noticed ๐Ÿ‘‡

It's not a very pleasant subject, and we love that so many people bring their dogs to enjoy Filnore Woods, but we do need to mention this.

We're sure it's not surprising that we regularly find bagged dog waste left hanging in trees or tucked into hedges around the woods, or quite often left on the big stone at the entrance to the woodland. We understand the intention is often to "collect it on the way back," but it doesn't always happen, and a bag left behind doesn't break down the way you'd hope, including ones marked as "biodegradeable."

We're certain that people who do this, would not be following our page. However it still needs to be said: there are bins near the skate park, or worst-case, please take it home with you. It's a small thing, but it makes a genuine difference to how the woods look and feel for the next person walking through, the wildlife that call the woods home and for us, the volunteers who have the unpleasant job of removing it.

Thanks for helping us keep Filnore Woods somewhere everyone can enjoy ๐ŸŒณ

Despite the sporadic wet weather, and a few of our regulars away or otherwise engaged, yesterday's work party cracked on with repairing, replacing and restoring the steps on the Valley path, a job that makes a real difference for anyone walking that route as well as helping to control erosion.

We were also really pleased to welcome Zach and Imogen, volunteering with us for the first time, they immediately got stuck in with great enthusiasm. It's brilliant to see younger people taking an interest in the woodland and conservation, and we hope to see them again soon.

Rain or shine, the woods need looking after, and yesterday's turnout made a genuine difference. Huge thanks to everyone who showed up ๐Ÿ’š

If you fancy joining us next time, keep an eye on our page for details of our next session.

One of the best parts of Filnore Woods is the view. From this spot, on a clear day, you can see all the way to the William Tyndale Monument near North Nibley and the edge of the Cotswolds which is quite a distance to take in from right here in Thornbury.

It's easy to walk past without realising just how far the view stretches, but it's one of those little details that makes the woods worth exploring especially on the higher levels.

Have you spotted this view before? Or do you have a favourite view from the woodlands? Let us know in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

If you've not been before, here's a quick rundown:
๐Ÿงค We work with traditional hand tools, no experience or equipment needed, everything is provided

Autumn's on its way... but don't write off the blue skies yet โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ‚

Just because the leaves are starting to turn doesn't mean the good weather's done with us. Days like this are still very much on the cards over the next few weeks, and the viewpoint is looking especially lovely at the moment.

Make the most of it while you can, go for a walk, take in the view, and enjoy the last of the warmth before autumn properly settles in ๐ŸŒณ

Can you feel autumn coming? ๐Ÿ‚

As we move into September, the woods are starting their slow shift into autumn. Over the coming weeks, keep an eye out for the leaves turning, the last of the summer's blackberries and hips, fungi starting to appear, and the canopy gradually opening up as the light changes.

It's one of the most beautiful times to visit. everything feels a little more golden, a little more atmospheric, and there's always something new to spot on each walk.

Tell us, are you an autumn lover, or do you wish summer would stick around a bit longer? Let us know in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡
