HINTS AND TIPS FOR EXHIBITORS:
We are often asked what the judges are looking for when they are deciding which exhibits deserve to be placed above another. We are not the experts but we can give you some hints that may help…
General tips to all classes:
the judges will be checking that any requirements on the schedule are met, for example if it specifies a size, amount or restriction.
Display: Judge will look at your presentation. White plate can be paper (preferred for fruit & veg) but for food items something more appropriate.
Flowers
The judge will look for any blemishes on leaves, flowers and foliage on your home-grown exhibits. With any arrangements, flowers can be bought or grown.
Fruit & Vegetables
Onions: Uniform size & shape for all entered/roots trimmed off/tied with raffia or thin string/display on sand or on a plain plate.
Runner Beans: Uniform size and shape for all entered/leave short stalk on/no protruding seeds/judge may break to ‘get a snap’/display on white plate or paper doily
Courgettes: No flower/uniform size and shape/display on white plate or paper doily.
Tomatoes: Uniform size & shape/leave Kalex on/ripe but not soft.
Collection (on tray): Selection of both fruit & veg, you can show us anything grown from your garden, be it something mentioned in the other classes and/or anything different/unusual. Judged on presentation, quality and varieties. Uniformity still required for same types of fruit and veg.
Fruit: Uniform size and shape and no blemishes/leave short stalk/display on white plate or paper doily.
Herbs: the more the merrier! (different varieties)
Wine/Liqueur: Clear bottles/clearly labelled with flavor and include date/year of making.
Baking: All entries in section C will be tasted by our judges so will be cut/opened/sampled. Presentation is important and is on display for the public so we may cover with cling film so it can be seen if you bring it in a container.
Photographs: mounted on card (not framed) as we display on boards with pins. No larger than A4.
