This Coen brothers masterpiece from 1996 is a lesson to us all that human stupidity is more terrifying than any alien construct from the multitude of films of the time which dealt with such things.

The characters are deliberately mundane, their logic, laughably thin most of the time and what drives them on are the problems of everyday life that we all face at times.

The film, despite its violence and distressing moments, all portrayed with an incredibly black humour, is a paean to the point of view that a simple quiet honest life is worth more than all the money and other things to which we ascribe such importance.

The film is not particularly graphic in its violence by the way, trusting you to understand that the worst moments don’t always require explicit depiction .

It’s a perfect start to the wonderful journey of exploring all the Coen brothers films. Don’t miss it !

Next Screening - Saturday 15th August 7:30pm

Set in a Yorkshire town during the First World War, the film follows a local choral society struggling to continue after many of its male members leave for military service. A new choirmaster takes charge and recruits teenagers and other members of the community to prepare a performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius. Against a backdrop of grief, uncertainty and social tensions, rehearsals become a way for people to escape the realities of war and preserve a sense of normal life.

The film combines gentle humour with more serious themes of loss, identity, sexuality and the importance of art during difficult times. Rather than presenting music as a simple solution to the horrors of war, it shows how singing can bring people together and offer moments of comfort and connection. Its quiet, understated style has been praised for its warmth and emotional sensitivity, although some critics felt that its many characters and storylines were not developed deeply enough.

FalFilm - Friday 24th July 7:30pm

Friday 24th July sees the second in our season of Alternative Falfilm presentations.

Run Lola Run, the acclaimed thriller directed by Tom Tykwer.

I really do have a great deal of affection for Run Lola Run, as a highly energetic and stylishly executed piece of cinema. It’s hard to think of a movie that can match the sheer intensity of the assault that the opening few moments make upon your senses, as the images flash across the screen, the heavy dance soundtrack kicks to life, and the camera dances and cuts like there’s no tomorrow.

This is the ultimate ‘What If’ movie. If you are a fan of “ The Man in the High Castle’, the fantastic sci-fi classic by Phillip K. Dick about what would have happened if the Germans had won World War II then you will love this. Although this film plays out on a smaller scale, the Monopoly board of one persons life as it were, it is none the less affecting and fascinating for all that.

The devil really is in the detail here. Watch the first 20 minutes very closely and then engage in one of cinema’s very best “Spot the difference’ games. Watch Lola engage in a game of Risk and lets see if it ends up with Ker-plunk or will you hold all the right Cluedo cards at the end.

The film is in German with sub-titles and has a running time of 77 minutes. Its short but, in my view very very sweet.

A jury is tasked with deciding the fate of a young defendant accused of murder, and what seems like an open-and-shut case quickly becomes far more complex. While nearly everyone is ready to deliver a guilty verdict, one juror argues that the evidence deserves closer examination. As the discussion continues, hidden details, unreliable testimony, and personal assumptions are brought into question. The story explores the importance of justice, critical thinking, and the willingness to challenge the majority when a person's life is at stake.

The drama unfolds almost entirely within the jury room, where rising tension exposes each juror's values, fears, and prejudices. Through thoughtful debate and careful reasoning, opinions gradually shift as reasonable doubt begins to grow. The film shows that truth is not always obvious and that fairness often requires patience and courage. Its title could be uncovered by counting every heated voice in the room and noticing the emotion that fuels their arguments.

Friday 3rd July @ 7.30pm.

“If Friday night films are your sort of ‘thing’ then don’t forget that on July 3rd we start our Alternative FalFilm season with the first of six slightly weird and wonderful films which will bring out the film critic in you and hopefully inspire a desire to explore the world of film beyond the boundaries of the ‘mainstream’

This seasons’ films include six cinematic treats that are readily accessible for any audience with nothing too outrageous although adult themes and language is naturally a feature of many , but not all, films that will be shown.

The films are designed to encourage thought and debate, and discussion is welcome and encouraged. Mark Rivers who has curated the six films will give a brief introduction to each one and will be inviting you to share with him details of other categories or genres of film that you would like to see in next year’s season. He will provide a list of suggestions to hopefully spark your interest. He promises that if the desire is there, he can move much further away from the mainstream. You have been warned !

We kick off with a film which really bombed when first released, but in the 25 years since then has become firmly established as one of the cult films of the early 21st century. It has spawned an obsessive fan base, detailed analysis of its plot and meaning and virtually microscopic interpretation of its dialogue and images. It’s also engaging and darkly humorous.

It’s ‘ Don ‘plus it’s ‘ie ‘and it’s ‘Dark ‘with an ‘o.’

If you think rabbits are disturbing, ominous portents of doom then don’t miss it!

It opens with a daring aviator facing certain doom, only for a celestial oversight to grant him an unexpected reprieve—an error that becomes A catalyst for everything that follows. The story moves fluidly between a richly coloured earthly existence and a stark, monochrome afterlife, raising questions about justice, love, and the nature of human experience. Through inventive cinematography and bold design, it constructs a world where bureaucratic eternity feels oddly familiar, and deeply human emotion carries cosmic weight.

As the protagonist fights to remain with the woman he loves, the tale evolves into a courtroom drama that is as whimsical as it is profound. The proceedings hinge on whether love can transcend the boundaries of Matter, time, and mortality itself, turning the narrative into both a legal and emotional reckoning. Balancing humour with poignancy, the film reflects on the fragile beauty Of Life while acknowledging the inevitability of Death, ultimately suggesting that what lies between those two states is what gives existence its meaning.
