The BFDG is a flourishing professional organisation of Art Department Creatives and Production Designers spanning the various branches of the Art Department in Film, Television and Commercials.

The BFDG was well represented at the recent Production Designers Gathering on Spetses, in Greece alongside 220 PDs from around the world. Blair Barnette, May Davies, Caroline Greville Morris, Emer O’ Sullivan, Jamie Lapsley, Marcus Wookey, Moira Tate and new member Francesca di Mottola were all attending to represent the BFDG. It was an intense four days of connection, learning, sharing, supporting and exchanging ideas and methods as well as survival tactics and war stories!

We all brought away new strategies and ideas that we will try and incorporate into Guild projects in the future. We all proudly sported our BFDG badges, handed out postcards to lure new members and were approached by two nordic countries to find ways to affiliate with their Guilds. No one on Spetses will forget that the BFDG were there!

Rhino Masterclass - 2 day course - 28th & 29th November at Pinewood Studios.

Members and non-members are invited to two days of advanced Rhino for film and TV with BFDG senior art director and production designer Olly Williams (Gladiator II, Loki, Silo), including a practical look at where AI fits in the Art Department.

The course is the next step after Level 1, for draughts people, set designers and art directors who already use Rhino and want to work faster on real builds.

Take advantage of Early Bird prices, available until 13 November.

Course content:

Day one: advanced Rhino for sets and props
- Commands and set-up for speed
- Modelling sets and complex props for real builds
- From model to drawing set: plans, elevations, sections and details
- Managing set builds: a case study
- Problem solving in 3D

Day two: the whole art department workflow, and AI
- Working between Rhino and other tools, from concept to construction
- Where AI saves time, and where it doesn't belong
- Credits and rights: an open discussion
- Final project: a set or prop, taken from model to drawings

Who Can Attend:

Designed for those already using Rhino in their work. It's a complex interface, so out of respect for everyone on the course, please come comfortable with the basics. New to Rhino? Take a Level 1 course first.

Equipment Required:

A Windows or Mac laptop that runs Rhino (a trial licence is fine), with 8GB+ of RAM, 10GB+ of free disk space and a graphics card. Bring a mouse; a keyboard and monitor help too.

Our latest Newcomer Programme cohort came together at Sky Studios Elstree last Saturday for an In-Person Workshop exploring key aspects of working in the Art Department; from mood boards, visualisation and backings to set decoration, product placement, clearances and surveys.

What a great day of learning it was, with fantastic feedback from attendees and valuable insights shared throughout!

Huge thanks to PD Duncan Howell for running the workshop and Sky Studios Elstree for allowing to use their space.

This is the first in a three-part series taught by BFDG member and experienced draughtsperson Dorrie Young, focusing on traditional hand draughting skills essential for the Art Department, especially when working with classic architectural details and mouldings.

Figurative sculptures, reliefs, organic shapes - they all require considerable attention to the curves that form their outline and a skilful approach to their shading to best communicate design intent.

Getting the curves right and using the shading to achieve a three-dimensional shape takes practice and experience, but also relies on an understanding of underlying proportions, methods of geometric construction and conventions for light and shadow.

Drawing for sculpture will introduce the students to these methods and conventions and offer opportunities to practice them on the drawing board.

The first day will cover one of the most common decorative forms in architecture - the acanthus leaf. Students will learn about the proportions and the overall approach for drawing and shading the acanthus and its variations.

On the second day students will be guided to use the knowledge they have gained to develop a drawing based on references containing reliefs or ornament

This course designed for Art Department Crew (grades Art Department Assistant and above) who already work with technical drawings, whether hand-drawn or digital: Jnr Draughtsperson, Draughtsperson, Art Director and Assistant Art Director

Entries for the Planet Positive Award, supported by Sky Studios Elstree, are open until 10th January 2027

Sustainable filmmaking is something the BFDG are passionate about and every year the Planet Positive Award is presented to recognise sustainable practice in the Art Department.

The award is dedicated to celebrating innovative thinking and groundbreaking approaches in environmental sustainability within the Art Departments of Film and TV productions, including Music Video and Commercials.

We accept entries from:-

✅ BFDG members
✅ BFDG Corporate members (suppliers can apply to join the BFDG if they would like to enter)
✅ Studio or production teams working closely with the Art Department
✅ Sustainability consultants or coordinators working with the Art Department

The nominated Art Department team MUST have one full BFDG Individual or Corporate Member. Perhaps you're not a BFDG member but someone you worked with on a sustainable production is - get in touch with them and encourage them to enter the production for the Planet Positive Award.

The award can also be extended to a particular production or Sustainability Co-ordinator who worked closely with the nominated Art Department.

We’re looking for innovators —those who not only champion environmentally friendly practices but also introduce new materials, designs, and methods that can inspire others within the industry.
