Su***de by Death and The Art of Belonging
When we speak of su***de, it is not simply an “act.” More often, it is the outcome of layers of pain…childhood wounds left untreated, cycles of addiction, the numbing grip of alcohol, the crushing weight of disconnection. Studies tell us that children who endure abuse are two to three times more likely to attempt su***de in adulthood. Alcohol and drugs complicate more than half of all su***des, particularly in young people. Behind each statistic is a human life, carrying a story too heavy to bear alone.
This is why the words we choose matter. Committed su***de carries the weight of blame, a phrase historically bound up with criminality, moral judgement, and sin, shaped by religious doctrine. But when someone dies by su***de, it is rarely a single, isolated decision. More often it is the final step in a long journey of pain, shaped by trauma, silence, or the pull of substances that numb before they destroy. To say died by su***de is to honour the truth: behind every loss is a human being who carried more than they could bear.
At the Gene Vincent Foundation, through our flagship programme Beyond Brushstrokes ~ The Art of Belonging, we are creating spaces where silence can give way to expression, where pain can find voice through art, and where isolation can be softened by community. Because belonging saves lives.
As we reflect during National Su***de Prevention Month, let us remember: every person carries a story we cannot see. A kind word, an open heart, a safe space to create - these small acts may tip the balance between despair and hope.
For those we have lost, we grieve. For those who are struggling, we stand with you. For all who seek belonging, we continue this work.
