To relieve sickness and protect and preserve good health for persons facing cancer, in particular but not exclusively breast cancer, or persons in need of rehabilitation as a result of such illness, within Cumbria and Lancashire, by providing or assisting in the provision for physical activity and recreation, notably dragon boating. Paddlers for Life Windermere is always keen to ensure that those who would benefit from our breast cancer dragon boat paddling activities are aware of our team. We publicise our charity wherever we can. One event is the Christmas Tree festival at Kendal Parish Church. Their Christmas Tree Festival is on 27th., 28th. and 29th of November at the Church (Kirkland, Kendal). We have a tree there and some members held a crafting session at Ragtag Arts & Community Scrapstore to make decorations around the theme 'Things that fly'. Visit the festival, if you can, to see what they crafted for our tree and also view many other decorated trees from different community groups.

Paddlers for Life Windermere held their final paddle of the 2026 season. We had glorious conditions for our 'Pink Paddle' for breast cancer awareness with two dragon boats and our V6 outrigger on a relatively calm Windermere. We also held our 'Flowers on the water' ceremony remembering fellow paddlers, family and friends before closing the eyes of our dragons.

Paddlers for Life Windermere continue to promote Breast Cancer Awareness this October. Covid lockdown and then return to paddling after covid interrupted our 'Pink Paddles'. Then the October weather of 2022 and 2023 meant we could only hold our 'Flower Ceremonies' to remember family, members and friends. In 2024 we were lucky to hold our 'Pink paddle' again.

Sometimes the October weather does not allow us to do our traditional 'Pink Paddle'. As it is often the final paddle of our season that ends in October we 'close the eyes' of our dragons for the winter. Here in 2017 Paddlers for Life Windermere members met indoors for a social meet. Exercise has an important role in preventing breast cancer and helping during treatment for breast cancer. October is breast cancer awareness month across the world and Paddlers for Life Windermere publicise this as part of our regular paddling calendar. Here are some past photos from early paddling seasons from 2011 to 2013. We have happy memories of the many friends who have paddled with us . We welcome anyone with a cancer diagnosis, and also their family and friends, to join us for our life affirming dragon boat paddling activities on Windermere.

Paddlers for Life Windermere final day at the 2026 IBCPC Participatory Dragon Boat Festival, France.
There were 1000 metres timed 'fun' races.

This is my second supporters race. Paul, Jane and I had been allocated to Annapolis Dragons Boat Club and had raced a 200m race on Saturday.

We had one race left on Sunday, a 1000m circular trip round the race lines. However on arrival at their team tent we found it was empty. Their BC team missed a race and so it looked like they had gone home early.

So Paul and I went round tents asking for anyone who fancied another paddle. We got enough and merged with another depleted team.

Pete, the ADBC coach, turned up and helmed the boat.

We’d never met before, let alone paddled together. Some had only paddled a few times previously.

We had someone from every continent on board.

Our time 5 m 11 s. A decent result for any team.

Paddlers for Life Windermere enjoyed the final day at 2026 IBCPC Participatory Dragon Boat Festival with 1000 metre timed trials. A huge 'Thank You' to everyone involved in organising this festival and making it run smoothly. It is wonderful to see so many BCS participants from teams across the world enjoying this event along with their supporters.
