During the 2025-26 academic we worked with students and staff from The Lakes School in Troutbeck to plan, design and deliver the first ever Cumbrian Youth Climate Summit specifically for Secondary Schools.

Groups of students from 6 other secondary schools attended on the day alongside representatives from local politics, businesses and third sector organisations.

It was a day of conversation and challenge with students benefiting greatly from sharing their climate actions with each other and making pledges for the future.

Students also got to find out about local projects and initiatives as well as potential career opportunities.

The final session of the day involved students asking questions of their local political representatives and getting them to make pledges, too.

With thanks to students and staff at The Lakes School for hosting the summit, Westmorland and Furness Council and the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership for their support, and all the schools and other organisations who came along on the day and made this summit such a success!

Reading is at the heart of Global Learning - critical thinking and empathy-building come from encountering the lives, experiences, views and cultures of others and reading is a brilliant way to get there!

However, a recent survey has found that reading enjoyment and daily reading among children and young people are now at their lowest levels in over 20 years and, in response, the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust have launched National Year of Reading 2026, a campaign to reverse the decline in literacy.

Last year, CDEC were privileged to support Lucy Nicholson with the Moving With... Taking Our Place project. Lucy worked with Sacred Heart Catholic Primary and Nursery School for a whole year and we are excited to share the video that gives a snapshot of what the pupils did and the impact the project had. During the 2025-26 academic year, we worked with pupils and staff from The Bishop Harvey Goodwin School in Carlisle to plan, design and deliver the Primary Youth Climate Summit which took place in June.
