June is all about Nature Connection!!
..and next Monday 8th June is World Ocean Day.

Did you know that 89% of all the Earth's animals live in the sea? Even though the oceans are so large, they are being damaged by the way we live our lives. Currently, too many fish are being caught and fossil fuels are making the ocean more acidic.

If the ocean could talk, what do you think it would ask us to do?

The first of our 2026 Youth Climate Summits is taking place next week - and we can’t wait!

We have 9 primary schools coming to The Bishop Harvey Goodwin School to celebrate what they are already doing in their schools to support our communities and our planet through their school's Climate Action Plans. And we are looking forward to the workshops, keynote speaker, Local Councillors, MPs and Mayoral candidates all supporting our young people to inspire and empower further action.

This year's keynote speaker is Marley who's been involved in at least the last 4 summits, firstly as an attendee and latterly to deliver workshops. They are a young person from Kendal inspired through work at their school, with CDEC and with Another Way to study Environmental Sciences at University.

We caught up with Marley after last year's summit in Barrow and asked them why the Youth Climate Summit is an important event; they said, “It helps me inspire young people, which is kind of my main goal, and it also helps them have more motivation and inspiration to do things that can be easily implemented into their lives and help them make a difference – to help them feel like they are doing something positive rather than feeling overwhelmed by everything.

“You know, a day like this made it so they could have that motivation to do something. As a young person, I sometimes had struggles with feeling motivated, feeling inspired, feeling like I could do something that mattered. And so [events like] this helps inspire me because of [other] young people.”

We’re excited to see what this year’s young people have been up to, and to hear about their ideas and the hopes they have for their future.

Really looking forward to working with Barrow residents again this year to decide on how this funding is spent. Please share with anyone you know who lives in Barrow

Live in Barrow? Care about your community? Then get involved!

This is your chance to have your say on how £85,000 is spent on community projects in Barrow.

A panel of volunteers will determine which local groups and projects the funding should support – so why not apply to take part?

Find out how to apply to be a panel member at https://register.enthuse.com/ps/event/BarrowParticipatoryGrantMakingScheme2026

The funding, managed by Cumbria Community Foundation on behalf of Team Barrow, has been provided by the UK Government and Team Barrow’s Delivery Board through a grant from the Social Impact Fund, which aims to make Barrow a better place to live, work, study, visit, and invest in.

Have Your Say on Community Funding in Barrow

Got ideas to make Barrow even better? Now’s your chance to shape how £85,000 of community funding is spent in our town.

The People Helping People Fund is back for its second year – and it’s all about local people making decisions for local communities.

Last year’s projects made a huge impact – from woodland wellbeing sessions boosting mental health, to community walks bringing people together and reducing isolation.

Now it’s your turn to get involved by joining our Community Panel Workshops, which take place at Piel View House, in Barrow Park, on the following dates:

Monday 29 June | 10am–2pm
Monday 6 July | 10am–2pm
Monday 13 July | 10am–2pm

Lunch is provided, and you don't have to be able to make all three sessions — but if you do, you'll get a voucher as a thank you.

Whether you’ve got lived experience, professional knowledge, or just a passion for your community—you’re welcome. Your voice matters!

Sign up by Friday 19 June:
