Brathay Trust Welcome to Brathay Trust's official page! A youth development charity. Established in 1946 we have been running as a charity for 75 years.

Brathay is a multi-faceted social enterprise offering coaching and outdoor residential experiences for businesses, schools, community groups and staycation guests – all helping to raise funds for improving the wellbeing and life chances of thousands of young people in real need every year.

We’re celebrating 80 years of Brathay with a family friendly afternoon in Ambleside, and there’s plenty to get involved with:

Brathay had such an impact on Holly that it’s only right we let her tell you her story…

"I first joined the programme with Brathay in 2016. I was hesitant to join at first as I didn’t really know anyone and I struggled to have the confidence to communicate and express myself due to having ADHD.

But my family convinced me to go and for the first time, I made really good friends (we all still keep in touch 10 years later).

Before the programme, I was a shy, quiet girl who was always scared to speak up. Brathay completely transformed my perception of the world and I have been able to speak confidently, maintain relationships and apply all of the core skills I learnt at Brathay in the workplace, with friends and with family.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunity.

P.S. I became really close with one of the people I met there and 10 years on we have bought our own house together, after both getting successful jobs, and have a “Brathay Baby” on the way! 👶

We will definitely be encouraging our son to do something similar when he’s old enough."

As part of Heritage Open Days, we’re opening up our historic estate and archive for a special afternoon celebrating local heritage.

• Explore the history of our estate and charity
• Join a guided walking tour and discover Brathay’s connection to outdoor learning
• Explore our newly curated archive display, created with Heritage Lottery Fund and Lakeland Arts
• Enjoy tea, coffee and light refreshments

We’d love to welcome local residents, supporters and anyone interested in Brathay’s history.

Our 2-day residential in the Lake District gives apprentices space to reflect on their development and build skills they can take back into their role.

Through expert facilitation in small groups with a mix of practical and reflective activities they will:

• Raise self-awareness
• Enhance professional behaviours
• Build confidence
• Develop teamwork

Looking for your next senior finance role with a charity where your work can make a real difference?

We’re looking to appoint a new Head of Finance to support Brathay's sustainability, strengthen financial leadership and help the organisation to continue to deliver transformational work with young people across the UK.

You’ll work closely with our Chief Executive and Trustees, providing clear financial insight, strengthening financial controls and overseeing our statutory responsibilities. You’ll also play an important role in helping Brathay build a sustainable future and identify opportunities to improve how we work. It’s a hands-on leadership role, combining strategic thinking with the day-to-day delivery needed to keep things moving.

What a summer it’s been for our Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme in Bradford! ☀️

Our young people have been getting stuck into all sorts of activities:

- Playing games at the local park
- Making new friends
- Exploring local museums
- Riding a steam train
- Learning how to drive a canal barge
- Trying foods from around the world

HAF gives young people facing different challenges at home the chance to hang out with friends, try new things and enjoy the school holidays.

And summer’s not over yet! We can’t wait to share what else we’ve been getting up to.
