Southwark Catholic Youth Service Southwark Catholic Youth Service (SCYS) is an agency of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Our ministry offers support to parishes and schools in the Diocese in the following ways:
• Training and support for adults and young people engaged in youth ministry; enabling their on-going formation
• Consultation for parishes; helping parishes to respond to young people and develop appropriate programmes
Provision of resources for use in parishes and schools
Development and support of CYMFed

You think it's just bread.

At every Mass, bread and w**e become the Body and Blood of Christ. Not just a symbol. Not just a reminder. Him.

"For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed" (John 6:55).

When Jesus said it, many of his disciples walked away, and he didn't call them back to explain he'd been speaking figuratively. He meant what he said, and the early Church believed him.

The Church still does. In the Eucharist, Christ is present "truly, really, and substantially" (CCC 1374).

It's the strangest, most beautiful claim in Christianity: that God would make himself small enough to hold.

God doesn't call the equipped. He equips the called.

St Paul begged three times for his "thorn in the flesh" to be taken away. God's answer wasn't to remove it, it was: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

If what you're being asked to carry feels bigger than you are, that may be the point. It was never meant to run on your strength.

Why is there a Catholic Church in England? Because one monk refused to look away.

In the 6th century, a monk named Gregory noticed a group of children in a Roman market, far from home, from a people who had never heard the Gospel. 'Not Angles,' he said, 'but angels.' He saw souls made for God.

Years later he became Pope, and never forgot them. He sent Augustine and forty monks to England in 596. The faith that took root among the English traces back to that one act of seeing.

St Gregory once wrote: 'The proof of love is in the works.' He saw, and then he acted.

His feast is today, 3 September. 'The Lord looks on the heart' (1 Samuel 16:7). Who might God be asking you to see, and then act for?

You haven't.

That isn't just encouragement; it's what the Church actually teaches: there is no sin, however grave, that the Church cannot forgive (CCC 982). None. The only thing that keeps anyone from mercy is not asking for it.

The prodigal son rehearsed a speech about being unworthy. His father never let him finish it.

Confession is available during our Young Adult Masses (and the 10am and 12pm at St. George's); and if it's been a long time, just tell the priest. He'll walk you through it.

Why do Catholics confess to a priest?

It's the question we're asked most, and the answer isn't "because the priest is holier than you."

On the evening of the Resurrection, Jesus breathed on the apostles and said: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven" (John 20:22–23).

Jesus entrusted his apostles with the ministry of forgiveness, and the Church has carried it ever since (CCC 1441–1442).

So when you hear "I absolve you," it is Christ forgiving you through a man who needs forgiving too.

Confession is available before our Young Adult Mass. If it's been years, that's exactly who it's for.

*Monthly Young Adult Mass* at St George’s Cathedral on Sunday 2 August! 🙏 Fr Dermott celebrated and preached, and it was great to see so many take the opportunity for confession and to join the social afterwards
