🌼🌿 Wheathampstead in Bloom – We Need You! 🌿🌼

We're delighted that plans are now underway to establish a volunteer-led Wheathampstead in Bloom team.

This is a fantastic opportunity for local residents, businesses and community groups to work together to help keep Wheathampstead looking beautiful, welcoming and full of village pride.

We're looking for two types of volunteers:

🌱 Wombles with Green Fingers
Do you enjoy gardening, planting, watering, weeding or helping flowers flourish? Whether you're an experienced gardener or simply enjoy getting your hands dirty, we'd love to hear from you.

💡 Ideas People and Bloom Champions
We're also looking for volunteers to help shape the future of Wheathampstead in Bloom. You don't need gardening experience. We need people who can help with planning, sponsorship, fundraising, publicity, community engagement and exploring the possibility of an Anglia in Bloom entry in 2027.

The commitment can be as little or as much as you're able to give.

Together we'll be:
🌼 Enhancing village planting schemes
🌿 Supporting local businesses and community groups
🐝 Encouraging biodiversity and wildlife
💚 Building community spirit and village pride
🏆 Exploring whether Wheathampstead could take part in Anglia in Bloom in 2027

Please meet our new mascots, Bramble and Briar - they say:

"Every little action helps our village bloom!"

If you'd like to get involved, please email [email protected]

🌸 LET’S KEEP WHEATHAMPSTEAD BLOOMING! 🌸

This summer, there will be no Parish Council hanging baskets in Wheathampstead.

While this is disappointing, it could also be the moment our community comes together to create something even more special. 💚

🌼 Excitingly, Wheathampstead Businesses is already exploring ways local High Street businesses can brighten the village with their own floral displays and hanging baskets — with possible competitions for the best displays! 🌺🏆

And looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, the Wheathampstead & District Preservation Society is exploring the launch of a dedicated “Wheathampstead in Bloom” group to help bring colour, creativity and community spirit back to the village year after year.

Could you help?

We’re looking for volunteers who might enjoy:
🌷 Organising projects
🌷 Gardening & watering
🌷 Fundraising
🌷 Seeking sponsorship
🌷 Or simply lending a hand

This is a chance to make a real difference to the look and feel of our wonderful village and help keep Wheathampstead looking blooming marvellous for everyone. 🌸

A couple of months ago, the ‘Happy to Chat’ bench on Marford Playing Fields was vandalised and taken out of action. Thanks to the amazing work of the Forging Friendship Club, it’s been fully restored and is back in its spot next to the Astro.

The bench, which was arranged by WDPS on behalf of a former Necton Road family, is all about encouraging conversation and connection in our community, so it’s brilliant to see it back where it belongs.

Thank you again to everyone at Forging Friendships for bringing it back to life.

Well what super heroes our Wheatie Wombles are...this mess was left behind in the wooded area by East Lane car park. Really not a pleasant job - but it is a mess no more...been cleared away by Veolia with encouragement from Ann Chance-read at Parish Council after the Wombles bagged it all up. Great team work for Keeping Wheathampstead Wonderful. Thanks everyone.

Today, WDPS was pleased to arrange a multi-agency meeting alongside Wheathampstead Parish Council to explore practical ways to reduce fly tipping in our village.

There is a particular concern around the ongoing issues in Sheepcote Lane, and it was encouraging to bring together a wide range of people who care about tackling this problem. Representatives from St Albans District Council, the Police, the Fire Brigade, local residents, Parish Councillors, WDPS members, and our fantastic Wombles all contributed to a productive and constructive discussion.

Several clear actions came out of the meeting, and we will reconvene in early July to review progress and keep the momentum going.

If you witness fly tipping in progress, please call 999 – the Police will respond if they are able. Alternatively, if you find fly tipping you can report issues via email to [email protected]. The Environmental team are proactive in investigating fly tips and gathering evidence that can lead to prosecutions. Please avoid disturbing any dumped materials, as this can reduce the chances of identifying those responsible.

There was a strong shared commitment in the room to work together to reduce fly tipping in Wheathampstead, and we are hopeful that this collaborative approach will make a real difference.

Thank you to everyone involved.

After several months of WDPS liaising with the owners of the building and Jarvis Homes, we are pleased to see that the tarpaulin on the Old Bakery has finally been replaced.
The WDPS continues to keep in close contact with Jarvis Homes who are keeping us up to date with their planning application, which will hopefully be submitted in June after ecology surveys have been completed.
