Hertfordshire Federation of Women's Institutes The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills.

Hertfordshire Federation has a variety of WIs, stretching from the outskirts of London to the borders of Essex, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. Our first WI opened in 1917 and the Federation was established in 1919. We were based in St Albans where we purchased our first County House in 1955. In 2010 we moved County House to more suitable accommodation in the High Street of the l

ovely village of Wheathampstead, almost in the centre of the County. The office is open to visitors 9.30am to 1pm Monday to Friday. We have 68 institutes and almost 3000 members spread throughout the County, meeting at different times of the day and days of the week. As well as the monthly meetings our Federation sub-committees organise a varied programme of events which take place around the County and at County House. These include art, crafts and cookery, sport, music, drama and public affairs. The Federation's monthly newsletter keeps members informed of forthcoming events. We are inviting members to donate new or gently worn clothing for sale at HFWI Annual Council Meeting, taking place at Verso Vineyard, St Albans on Saturday 10 October 2026.

There will be a number of collection points across the county for your convenience.

Donations will be available for members to purchase, with 70% of the proceeds going to St Albans & Hertsmere Womens Refuge.

Hertfordshire Federation Of WIs are looking forward to welcoming delegates and WI members to our Annual Meeting on Saturday 10 October, taking place at Verso Vineyard Church, St Albans. Doors open at 09.30am for 10.30am start.

There will be lots of lovely stalls to browse, offering goods to purchase before the meeting starts and again at lunchtime.

Tea/coffee & cakes will be available to buy, courtesy of Wood WI.

The morning will be our usual business meeting, as well as Guest Speakers Dr Bryony Norburn talking about the female code-breakers of Bletchley Park and Herts Constabulary's Cyber Crime Dept officer, Chen Tsui talking about being Fraud & Cyber Crime Aware.

Our Guest Speaker in the afternoon will be Jeryl Stone, NFWI Chair who will be talking about the 'WI Moving Towards 2030'.

Please remember you will need to bring your own packed lunch. Free parking is available onsite - but please try to car share where possible.

We are delighted to offer members what we think will be a fascinating visit to the Hertfordshire Archives & Libraries Service. As some of you may know, HALS is where all WI records are kept so we might be able to view some of our oldest documents on the visit.
The visit will include the following:
- A tour of the reading rooms and archives store
- A visit to the conservation studio
- View of some original documents

Federation of Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridge & Suffolk West Women's Institutes are delighted to invite WI members to a WI Day 2026 event at Audley End House & Gardens.

We look forward to seeing members from Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridge and Suffolk West Federations.

In partnership with English Heritage, the WI will be taking over Audley End again for WI Day 2026. Entrance and free flow access to the house and garden are included. A bit nearer the time, WI Event Admission Ticket holders will be invited to sign up for various special House Tours, Stable Tours, Garden Tours and Women at Audley re-enactments. To take part in these WI specific tours and shows on the day you must purchase a WI Event Admission Ticket, even if you are already an English Heritage member.

They will receive a prize of £200.00 from NFWI. We were so pleased to hear their name being announced at the AGM last week. 🏆🌟✨
