A Brief Historical Introduction to Freemasonry in Hertfordshire It has been written long ago that St.Alban introduced Freemasonry into Britain in when he formed the first Lodge in AD 287. However, in Hertfordshire there were three Lodges founded in the eighteenth century, the oldest being The Red Rampant Lyon No.181 a name that has recently been resurrected in the Province. The Province was offici

ally formed when William Forsteen received his patent as Provincial Grand Master on 24th March 1797 although he had no Lodges to govern. The first Lodge was constituted in 1829 and the Province slowly grew under the next three Provincial Grand Masters to a total of just eight. Then Sir Thomas Frederick Halsey became Provincial Grand Master an office he held for no less than fifty years by which time the Province had forty-one Lodges. The son of Sir Thomas Frederick Halsey, Admiral Sir Lionel Halsey who ruled the Province for nineteen years, actually consecrated more Lodges in that time than his father did in fifty. Currently there are two hundred and seven Lodges meeting in eleven Masonic centres as well as a number of other venues. Much more could be written here about Individual Provincial Grand Masters and Lodges, but it is suggested that reference is made to two books ‘History of Freemasonry in Hertfordshire’ by G.B.Abbott and ‘Happy Hertfordshire 1797-1997, both of which can be researched at the Provincial Museum and Library at Fleet House in St.Albans. - See more at: http://www.pglherts.org/province/history/ .1zN98nlD.dpuf

Cheshunt Lodge installed Enzo Leone into the chair of King Solomon on April 18 along with his sons Franco and Marino as Senior Warden and Junior Warden respectively. Enzo, joined the lodge in 2009, and the lodge arranged the officers so that Franco, who was Initiated in 2021, and Marino, Initiated in 2023, could join their father.

A memorable occasion for Old Manor Lodge involving the Murray family. Pictured are Tom Davidson, Barry Murray, Stuart Murray, Josh Murray, and Richard Casini, gathered after Josh Murray was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason.

This meeting came after Barry was initiated into the Lodge. The back-to-back milestones not only highlight the strong family connection within Freemasonry but also reflect the enduring traditions and fellowship of Old Manor Lodge

At the Lodge Trust and Fear Not meeting on April 13, a 50 Year Service Certificate was presented to Peter Reeve, a founder of the lodge, by Alan Reid, Assistant Provincial Grand Master.

Alan's presentation covered many details of Peter's half century in Freemasonry including his career as a police officer. Peter and Alan have known each other for 60 years having first met as members of the Hertfordshire Police Cadets in 1966.

Peter was also joined by David Hampton, Grand Superintendent of the Royal Arch, whom he Initiated in 1990 when Worshipful Master of Knebworth Lodge.

Huge congratulations to Josh Little, a Brother of Cheshunt Lodge and Companion of Hooks Cross Chapter, who completed the TCS London Marathon on Sunday 26 March in 4 hours 20 minutes.

Josh, whose father is also a member of Cheshunt Lodge, has raised more than £2600 for Noah’s Ark, a charity for children with serious or life-limiting conditions based at The Ark, its state-of-the-art hospice in north London.

A close family friend of Josh’s was supported by Noah’s Ark which is why he chose the charity and abstained from the lovely food and wine served at the lodge meeting the previous week!

At a recent meeting of Old Stortfordian Lodge, Roger Glynn was presented with his certificate marking 50 years of Craft membership by the Past Deputy Provincial Grand Master Dick Knifton.

A keen shot and founding member of the Lodge of True Aim, Roger had already been advised he would receive the Provincial Grand Master’s Certificate of Service at the forthcoming Provincial meeting.

What he did not know was that such recognition requires the rank of Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden. At the conclusion of the presentation, Dick Knifton duly conferred a field promotion to PPSGW, followed by a second certificate reflecting his new rank, a true double-barrelled surprise.

The Fleet House Light Blues Club recently marked its 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of bringing newer Freemasons together from across Hertfordshire.

What began as a simple idea has grown into a thriving and energetic community, offering opportunities to visit lodges, build friendships and experience more of Freemasonry beyond the lodge room. Over the years, the club has played an important role in supporting Light Blues at the start of their Masonic journey.

As part of the celebrations, a short film titled Origins was premiered, telling the story of how the club came into being, from its earliest concept through to the inaugural meeting.

If you are a newer Freemason, and have yet to experience the club, now is the perfect time to get involved and see what it has to offer.

Tuesday 24 March saw Lodge Secretary Mike Williams installed into the Chair at a packed Hertingfordbury. Yet neither the occasion nor the sumptuous five course meal proved to be the highlight of the evening.

Even though Martin Francis represented the Province, it was John Norris who presented a 50-year Certificate of Service to Gordon Stringer. It quickly became clear why John had taken on the role, as his teaching career had seemingly followed Gordon around the country, prompting a stream of entertaining stories centred on local village pubs and their ales.

The result was a warm, humorous, and memorable evening, with both the meeting and festive board thoroughly enjoyed by all.

INTRODUCING: THE ONE JOURNEY STRIPES
In a move reflecting the continued alignment of the Craft and Royal Arch, the new ‘One Journey’ striped trousers have been introduced. Designed to symbolise unity across the two orders, these vibrant stripes blend tradition with a more contemporary expression of Freemasonry.

Worn with standard morning dress, the trousers offer a subtle yet striking way to reflect your place within the wider Masonic journey. The colours represent harmony, progression, and shared purpose, while sitting neatly beneath the apron.

Suitable for meetings across both the Craft and Royal Arch, they provide a bold way to show pride and individuality within tradition.

Available now from Freemasons’ Hall and via Fleet House Regalia.

Halsey Hall, Watford, was pleased to welcome veterans for their Christmas lunch and celebrations, hosted by a Chelsea Pensioner and former footballer Luther Blissett.

Harry Lomas ably led a group of elf-like volunteers to ensure that dining went off without a hitch. The sous chef was none other than the UGLE Grand Secretary, Adrian Marsh, showing the amazing work that our Masonic Halls can do within our communities.

With members coming together to support as volunteers, Freemasonry continues to demonstrate why we are an organisation that people aspire to be part of.

GOING FOR GROWTH

Hope doesn’t always arrive with fanfare — sometimes it turns up as people showing up consistently to do what needs doing.

That’s exactly what happens at Earthworks St Albans, where people with learning disabilities work alongside volunteers to care for 3.5 acres of eco-gardens, growing fruit and vegetables and building wildlife habitats.

On 12th December, Steve Catling, accompanied by Michael Leach of Old Manor Lodge, visited to present a £500 cheque to Carmen Nevado and Angelina Jenkins, helping to keep that work going.

The lodge has also been supporting St Albans Foodbank for the past 12 months. Throughout the year, the foodbank provided 13,819 emergency food parcels — a clear sign of how vital consistent support is.
