As part of of National Cadet Week 2026, we are celebrating the adult volunteers (CFAVs) that make the experiences possible for our Cadets and other Volunteers.

Meet Civilian Instructor Jan Szuminski:
Jan joined 967 as a Cadet in August 1972 when we were Kirkham & South Fylde Squadron and based in a different location to our current HQ. He progressed through the ranks to Sergeant before becoming a Civilian Instructor 1978. Jan then commissioned as a Pilot Officer (VRT) in 1984, and eventually left the organisation in August 1992 as a Flying Officer (VRT). Luckily for us, Jan now has time to volunteer again and rejoined 967 as a Civilian Instructor in March this year. He is a key member of the team, delivering a range of subjects to Cadets every week.

Meet Service Instructor AS1 Josh Griffin:
Josh joined 967 (BAe Warton) Squadron as a Cadet whilst we were parading virtually during Covid and our building was then being refurbished, meaning unusually, he met members of the Squadron for the first time in person at Inskip Cadet Centre. He left as a Cadet in September 2024, joining the Royal Air Force, and returned as a Service Instructor in October 2025. Josh is a valued member of the Squadron, and is always happy to share his experiences of everything from eg completing his Gold DofE award to joining the military, with Cadets currently on that journey.

Meet Civilian Instructor Vic Curtis:
Vic joined 345 (City of Lancaster) Squadron as a Cadet in September 2015, where she progressed through the ranks to become a Cadet Warrant Officer (CWO). She aged out in May 2025 and continued supporting the Squadron as a staff member before moving to BAe Warton Squadron in June 2025, where she remains as a Civilian Instructor.

Meet Warrant Officer Kirsty McCann:
Kirsty joined 341 (City of Preston) Squadron as a Cadet in June 2009 and stayed there until she aged out in September 2015 as a Cadet Warrant Officer. She then moved to 2486 (Lytham St Anne’s) Squadron as an adult Sergeant, where she stayed until the Squadron closed and merged with 967 (BAe Warton) Squadron in 2019, where she remains. In March 2026, she also became the Wing Deputy Training Officer. She has delivered all sorts of Adventure Training and music activities, is a DofE Award Leader for the Squadron, and recently organised the Wing Sailing overseas trip!

Meet CI Mike Parker:
Mike joined 967 (BAe Warton) Squadron in July 2009 as a Cadet, and remained there until he aged out in July 2016. He returned to the Squadron as a Civilian Instructor in April 2025, where he is now an integral part of the unit as our Training Officer, regularly delivering activities such as First Aid, and organising visits.

🚀 Help Cumbria and Lancashire Air Cadets get to NASA! 🚀

Cumbria and Lancashire Wing are organising a trip to NASA in 'Murica! This is a fantastic opportunity for cadets to experience Space, Science, Technology and Engineering first hand!

A central "GoFundMe" has been initiated to support the cadets taking part in the trip. All donations help to reduce the overall cost for everyone taking park, making it more accessible. No matter how big, or small! It's not Rocket Science! 😉
