Wakefield Riding for the Disabled Association WRDA provides horse riding and therapy to people and groups with disabilities within the area.

Licensed by Wakefield Council under 'The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities involving animals) Regulations 2018', LN/00000920 Wakefield Riding for the Disabled Association (Wakefield RDA) is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Charity that provides horse riding for people with disabilities to improve their general health and well-being. We also provide training and qualifications in horse care and riding for young people. Our clients include small children, young people and adults with a wide range of physical and learning disabilities, mental health and behavioral problems. Wakefield RDA was established in 1990 and riding activities are based at Camphill Community, a Specialist FE Residential College for young people with learning disabilities. Students at Camphill Community work alongside RDA to learn horse care, help with stable duties and enjoy riding sessions. Wakefield RDA offers it’s services all year round to people from Wakefield and the surrounding areas.

Please save the date! Thursday 26th November.

The topics for this event are currently being finalised.

We’d love to hear from you on the topics you’d like covering.

We are thinking things like:-
Winter feeding & nutrition.
Common winter ailments.
Rugs & Rugging.
Winter Colic and Gastrointestinal problems....
Mud fever & skin care with Sellequine.
Winter health & preventative measures.

Please add any additional topics you’d like covering in the comments and we’ll hold a poll in the coming days to finalise the topics.

Today our Camphill Wakefield Wednesday Enterprise students passed their RDA Grade 1 horsecare. They had to identify points of the horse and parts of the saddle and bridle.

We are very proud to announce that Centre Manager Carol Blake was shortlisted at the RDA UK recognition awards for Coach Mentor of the year.
The award celebrates the dedication, passion and commitment of individuals who have made a meaningful impact on the RDA community over the past year.
Carol’s exceptional contributions have been truly recognised - and RDA UK are delighted to honour her hard work and dedication.

Wakefield RDA and the Yorkshire Region RDA second that.
Carol is a brilliant coach mentor who supports many coaches and trainee coaches throughout Yorkshire.
This is a very well deserved award, and even though Carol wasn’t the outright winner at the National Awards she is definitely the winner in our eyes!

Our Thursday Camphill Wakefield Enterprise students had a great morning.
All the students we have are starting from different places with regards to experience with horses. Some already have a some experience of being around horses and others are starting with no experience at all. Someone might already know the names of all the grooming kit, and someone else might never have been near or touched a horse before. We try and tailor our activities so that everyone makes progress in their own way and at their own pace.

Today one of the students finally found the courage to ‘touch’ Bill. The student is fascinated by horses and loves to watch them eating but until yesterday had never been close to one. What an achievement.

Another student started with a blank whiteboard, recalled the usual routine jobs, and the coach wrote them down. They then had to decide on the order to do them. After teabreak they groomed Sunny.

It was another productive morning for our Camphill Wakefield Wednesday Enterprise group.
They are quickly picking up our daily routine and learning (and remembering) lots of the equine terms we use.
Today’s jobs completed included drying and grooming horses, haynet filling, poo picking, sweeping and field checking. They also had the opportunity to start developing their leading skills.
As always everything was done with lots of smiles and enthusiasm.

Yesterday participant Nora’s session was based on navigating independently around a course. She had to match numbers and animals. This was an exercise to work on transferring reins in to one hand, plus her balance and coordination. Well done Nora!
