What a great day out we had today. We had a full guided tour from a couple of the fabulous volunteers what a fabulous place! The wild weather certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of Phil and Steve who gave us an interesting and detailed tour around the garden and the tower itself. The views from the top were incredible and we were all pleased we braved the ‘stumble stairs’ to the top. After the tour we walked along to where we warmed up and tucked into the lovely food and hot drinks. We got a good soaking with the hail and rain on our way back to the coach but it was well worth it. Thanks so much to Deborah and Judith for organising the trip and the transport. Would recommend this to anyone it was a lovely day out.

We had a great night last night at our May meeting, which is also our anniversary meeting. We had a special cake to mark our 16th year, how time flies! We also had come to give us some training to align with the ‘Bystanders can be Lifesavers’ Campaign which was the 2025 Resolution. Brian, Ian and Wendy were fantastic and we all came away with some hands on experience and a lot more confidence and knowledge to step in to help if ever we should need to. The raffle this month was in aid of the Air Ambulance and the lovely selection of prizes were organised by Deborah, thanks Deb! Thanks to all our lovely members and the visitors who turned out despite it being bank holiday. The hall looked great with all the colourful bunting up too which made the birthday celebrations even more special!

We had a very interesting evening with Tony Stephenson at our meeting last night. He shared with us a huge variety of clips from films that had scenes shot in Newcastle and the surrounding area. We saw historical footage of places that now no longer exist, many people had a trip down memory lane. It was a surprise to find out how many stars had walked the streets of Newcastle. Tynemouth and Whitley Bay also got in on the act! Thanks to Deborah for once again buying lovely raffle prizes. We also had a gorgeous variety of cakes for the meeting many thanks to Linda and Carole for baking. Thanks also to those who came early and helped set up it was a great help with many of committee enjoying well deserved time away.

What a stunning morning for February’s coffee morning! Happy ‘Galentines’ to all of our lovely members! 💕💖 we actually saw blue sky for the first time in what feels like forever!! It was a little icy underfoot in the park but thankfully we all made it in one piece and had a lovely catch up. The picture inside is a bit shadowy with the sun steaming through the window but we aren’t complaining about that!! ❤️

We had the pleasure of hearing a fascinating talk from Pat Stevens this evening about the women’s suffrage movement. She explained the difference between Suffragists and Suffragettes and the various organisations involved in the movement. Her talk focussed particularly on the subject from a north east perspective. Pat’s talk included how women took to Newcastle streets in 1909 to fight for the vote. The so-called Battle of Newcastle happened when the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, David Lloyd George visited the city to give a speech. Suffragettes gathered to lobby him over the vote and to protest at the force feeding of women on hunger strike in prison. This resulted in a significant demonstration in Newcastle during which women were arrested, imprisoned and some of them force-fed. Pat is also a city guide in Newcastle and has written a book on this extremely interesting topic. It was great to see so many of our members this evening (50 members and 2 visitors attended our first meeting of 2026)! Thanks to Debbie and Joanne, tonight’s bakers, for providing us all with delicious cakes! Congratulations to the raffle winners (thanks to Deborah for organising the prizes).

We had such a lovely afternoon yesterday at the Northumberland Federation WI Christmas Carol concert at St Nicholas’s cathedral in Newcastle. Lovely playing from Salvation Army band and a great way to start the Christmas season with carols and comradeship of the WI.
