Sunday for Sammy

Sunday for Sammy The Sunday for Sammy Trust was established and set up in 2000, to help support young people in the region looking to embark on a career in performing arts.

Sunday for Sammy is a registered charity that celebrates the rich creative spirit of the North East - raising funds to support emerging talent in music, theatre, comedy dance and across the performing arts. Founded in memory of Tyneside actor Sammy Johnson, the charity offers grants to help aspiring performers access equipment or training, and career-building opportunities. Whether it’s a young mu

sician needing studio time, a theatre student seeking tuition support, or a performer needing a new instrument, Sunday for Sammy is here to help. Our flagship variety show at the Utilita Arena brings together the region’s biggest stars and brightest new voices in a joyful celebration of laughter, music and legacy. But our work doesn’t stop there - through year-round fundraising and events, we’re building futures, backing talent, and keeping Sammy’s spirit alive in every note and performance. Tickets on sale now for our eagerly anticipated comeback show on February 15th 2026, get yours now from our ticket link.

A historic day for Darlington 🚉

Today, Ray Laidlaw, Billy Mitchell and Hayley McKay officially launched the incredible new Darlington station development, marking a major milestone for the town and its proud railway heritage.

Hayley, an SFS grantee from 2008, performed as part of North Riding, showcasing the incredible talent of our alumni and highlighting how we continue to support and celebrate our grantees long after their awards. We were proud to be invited by London North Eastern Railway to be part of such a landmark occasion😊

From the legendary Peppercorn Class A1 No. 60163 Tornado standing beside the modern LNER Azuma “Darlington”, to special live performances throughout the journey, the atmosphere was unforgettable from start to finish.

An honour to witness one of the very first departures from the new platforms ahead of their official opening, here are a couple of snaps from a truly memorable day 🧡

We’re absolutely delighted to share that Scott Tyrrell’s powerful animated film Any One Of Us has won a Smiley Charity Film Award 🧡

Scott has been part of the Sunday for Sammy family for many years, sharing his poetry on our stage and supporting creative projects behind the scenes. This award is such a deserved recognition of his brilliant work and the meaningful collaboration behind the film.

Created through workshops with a mental health charity, Any One Of Us was shaped by real experiences, resulting in a moving and honest piece that shines a light on mental health in a thoughtful and creative way.

A huge congratulations to Scott and everyone involved, we’re incredibly proud to have supported this journey 😊

Can you help one of our former grantees and Alan Hull Award Winner Katie Grace?

Katie's looking for musicians/artists/educators/producers etc views from the North East to help with her university studies.

If you can help by completing her survey for her dissertation about the impact of formal and informal community music groups on North East music careers it will help her with her research.

We'd love it if you can share this please, the more responses, the better the conclusions Katie can draw.

Link in the comments for the survey :)

A huge thank you to Maldron Hotel Newcastle 🧡

For all of their incredible support during our Sunday for Sammy show back in February. From early planning right through to show week, their team were there every step of the way, looking after our cast, crew and everyone involved.

Over 200 rooms, rehearsal spaces, constant support and somehow always calm when things got hectic (which they definitely did 😅). It genuinely felt like a home from home during one of the busiest weeks we’ve ever had.

That kind of support plays a massive part in making the show what it is, and ultimately helps us continue what Sunday for Sammy is all about, supporting young North East talent.

We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you to Anna and the whole team 👏🧡

We were so proud to have the incredible students from SA Performing Arts Centre join us at the Sunday for Sammy show back in February 🧡

Their Our House mash-up absolutely smashed it on that stage. So much energy, talent and confidence, they lit up the arena.

Hearing what the experience meant to them makes it even more special. This is exactly what Sunday for Sammy is all about… giving young people the opportunity to perform on a huge stage and take that next step in their journey.

The future of North East talent is in safe hands 👏🧡
