Local volunteers & Tynemouth Aquarium staff are working together caring for injured & unwell seals, then releasing them back into the wild

Meet Kraken!
Rescued by BDMLR in Northumberland, he was being harassed by people and dogs, and also looked to have an infected mouth.
He was taken to the North East Seal Triage centre overnight before coming to us at the seal hospital.
At 13.73kg he is underweight, but feisty, and will happily try to bite at the ankles of our volunteers when they are looking after him.
This is a really good reminder that seals are wild animals with incredibly sharp teeth, and you shouid stay well away if you see one in the wild!
With plenty of fish from Tynemouth Aquarium he should gain lots of weight to get him beach body ready to be released back into the wild ❤️

A trip to Blyth beach, and there was a team clearing the still present nurdle problem from the sand.
While one of the worst environmental incidents seen here for some time, and one we will likely be seeing the impact of for a long while, it is amazing to see individuals, groups and businesses all coming together for a common cause ❤️

A returning visitor!!
Last week St. Mary's Island Wildlife Conservation Society volunteer Linda spotted a yellow tag on one of the seals on the island.
After checking it was found to be Isla, a pup from us at Tynemouth Seal Hospital
Isla was rescued from the island in March 2019 with lungworm and skinny at 20kg
Released fully fit in May at 34.3kg
Has been spotted in Yorkshire in January 21 then the island in November 21
Brilliant to see on St Mary's island by the team there last week!
Born in 2018, she will be 7 and a half now, and will have likely started pupping at 3-4 years old 😀
Over 7 years in the wild thanks to the work of the volunteers at Tynemouth Seal Hospital and support of Tynemouth Aquarium ❤️

Yesterday 5th of May was the release day for Bart and Mowgli 😁
Rescued by and British Divers Marine Life Rescue volunteers, they both came to us for the second half of their rehabilitation journey, supported by a regular supply of fish from which helped them get stronger and bigger so they have the best chance in the North Sea ❤️
Bart was found with bite wounds and a heavy worm burden, as was Mowgli which they were given treatment for and have made a brilliant recovery.

Bart has gained a massive 20kg while in rehab, thanks to the care of the volunteers both at Blyth Wildlife Rescue, BDMLR and Tynemouth Seal Hospital, as well as visitors to Tynemouth Aquarium who support us with all the fish 🐟
