25/03/2026

After three consecutive meetings full of contests, Riverside returned to its standard format of speeches, evaluations, and table topics. The meeting was led brilliantly by Toastmaster of the Evening, Madhurantika Mouli, who set the theme โ€œLive From the Best Club in the Universeโ€โ€”which, for those of you who donโ€™t know, is of course Riverside Communicators ๐Ÿ˜†. And what better way to celebrate this than with a full room of nearly 40 members and guests!

โฑ๏ธ Madhu was marvellously supported by Josephine Quint, who kept us perfectly on track as Timekeeper whilst adding her own personal touch and humour to the role.

๐ŸŽค Prepared Speeches
1๏ธโƒฃ Rhithika Srinivasan started proceedings with an icebreaker. We enjoyed listening to her as she confidently spoke to us about herself and her life experiences ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝโœ…

2๏ธโƒฃ Ilia Sukhovalovโ€™s winning speech was about why you never truly fail when youโ€™re learningโ€”and the three laws that prove it ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝโœ…

3๏ธโƒฃ Mechthild Ruggier spoke about karma whilst bravely dealing with irritating interrupters who did their best to disrupt her speech ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝโœ…

4๏ธโƒฃ Finally, Ben delivered a keynote speech about his childhood, comparing it to todayโ€™s generation of children, who often donโ€™t appreciate the beauty of nature around them ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝโœ…

Before the break, our VPMโ€”the dashing, delightful, and delectable Surinder Alhuwaliaโ€”did the most unthinkable and introduced 11 guests in 4 minutes! Riversideโ€™s growth this year is largely down to this Very Perfect Man, Surinder, who also celebrated his 60th birthday. Happy birthday, Surinder!

๐Ÿ“ Evaluations
After the break, the speeches were expertly evaluated by Luke Thomas, Kim Locherer, Nail Khabib, and Charlotte Oliver. It was wonderful to see Nail begin his journey as an evaluatorโ€”you would have been forgiven for thinking heโ€™d done it before. It was Charlotte, however, who wowed the audience with her honest and constructive assessment of Benโ€™s speech.

๐Ÿ’ญ Table Topics
The impromptu speaking session was led by Richard Sharkey, who prepared questions about Riverside and Toastmasters, infused with a bit of Irish โ˜˜๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช flair in recognition of St Patrickโ€™s Day. We had a mixture of topics, from pots of gold and leprechauns robbing jewellery shops to the top qualities expected from mentors. It was former member, Herb Klein, who won with his topic on showing solidarity with a mischievous, thieving leprechaun ๐Ÿ€

Awards given:
Ice Breaker Speaker ๐Ÿฅ‡: Rhithika Srinivasan
Best Speaker ๐Ÿฅ‡: Ilia Sukhovalov

On Wednesday night, Area 29 held the Area International Speech and Evaluation Contest ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐ŸŽค at Riverside Communicators Club Headquarters in Twickenham โ€” and what a night it was ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ! It was a jam-packed room with members from across four of the five clubs in the area: Riverside Communicators, Trojans Speakers in Ealing, JAL from Richmond, and Sky Osterley Toastmasters.

In the Evaluation Contest we had Imal Rathnayake (Trojans), Joy Kettler (JAL), Dom Bertioli (Riverside), and Silvana Cuomo (Sky).

In the International Speech Contest we had Orgesa Meli (JAL) and Julian Ward (Riverside).

Thank you ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ to everyone who took part in the contests, and congratulations to the following competitors who will now progress to represent their club and area at the Division D finals in April ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ

Evaluation Contest Results:
๐Ÿฅ‡ 1st Place: Dom Bertioli
๐Ÿฅˆ 2nd Place: Imal Rathnayake

International Speech Contest Results:
๐Ÿฅ‡ 1st Place: Orgesa Meli
๐Ÿฅˆ 2nd Place: Julian Ward

Itโ€™s easy to take for granted the work that goes on behind the scenes to make a contest happen. It requires volunteers preparing both before the contests โ€” as lots of work goes into preparing paperwork, searching for volunteers, and briefing them โ€” as well as running the contest on the night.

So an enormously huge thank you goes out to the following ๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ:

1๏ธโƒฃ Firstly, our Contest Chairs, Zara Sari and Harth Lath, who were both in the role for the first time ๐Ÿ‘
Well done for stepping up โ€” we desperately need as many members trained to take on these roles, and itโ€™s a great speaking opportunity โœ…

2๏ธโƒฃ Duncan Hammett in the Chief Judge role, and all the judges from across the area and beyond. Itโ€™s just not a contest unless Duncan is involved in some capacity! โœ…

3๏ธโƒฃ Our Functionaries:
โฑ๏ธ Nail Khabib and Heather Baker in the Competition Timer roles.
๐Ÿงฎ Michael Yogarajah and Luke Thomas in the Competition Counter roles.
๐Ÿช– Josephine Quint and Vikash Kumar acting as Sergeants-at-Arms. โœ…

4๏ธโƒฃ Tiziana Maringola for running the Table Topics session before the prize-giving ceremony. โœ…

5๏ธโƒฃ Our mystery speaker, Mariko Newell from Corinthians Toastmasters Club. โœ…

๐ŸŒŸ Our next meeting ๐Ÿ“† on 18 March is a normal club meeting. Why not come along and join us for a wonderful night of speeches and impromptu speaking? ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ
