Gorgeous high tide in Twickenham today, but where are the swans? I haven't seen our usual feathered residents for some time now. Let me know if you've spotted them up or down the river! 🤔🦢

Spotted this absolute gem at Ham Fair last weekend. Is there anything more wonderfully British?

Hey everyone! Today, we are taking a scenic walk from the historic Twickenham Green all the way over to St Margarets. We will be skipping the main roads to head through some quiet backstreets, take a quick break at Kneller Gardens, and follow the lovely riverside path along the Duke of Northumberland river. Let's get walking!

Have you ever noticed this sticker while out and about in our borough?
Way back in 2004, Richmond Council actually made history by launching the UK’s very first Community Toilet Scheme. Instead of building traditional public loos, they came up with an innovative idea to partner with local businesses like pubs, restaurants, shops, and libraries to open up their facilities to the public.
It is an absolute lifesaver, and the best part is that it is available for absolutely everyone who needs it, completely free. Whether you are a resident, a visitor, a shopper, or a delivery driver, you are welcome to use these facilities without any obligation to buy anything. You do not need to be a paying customer, and you can walk straight in during normal business hours because the Council compensates the businesses to keep them open to the public for free.
As you can see from the symbols on the sticker in image.png, the scheme also focuses heavily on accessibility, with many locations offering dedicated wheelchair-accessible facilities and baby-changing spaces. You can check the council's live interactive map to see all the participating venues near you at www.richmond.gov.uk/community_toilet_scheme.
Have you ever used one of these community toilets while out and about? Which local businesses have you found to be the most welcoming? Please share your experiences in the comments below to help out your fellow neighbours! 👇

Popped along to the Richmond sustainability event yesterday and met a brilliant lady showcasing The Party Kit Network! 🥳🌱
If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a fantastic eco-friendly initiative. Instead of buying single-use plastic cups, plates, and bunting for birthday parties, you can just hire a reusable party kit from a local coordinator right in your neighbourhood for a tiny fee.
It saves so much rubbish from going straight to landfill, and it’s way cheaper than buying disposables every time.
Such a simple, clever idea for keeping our local celebrations a bit greener. 🌍✨
Have you ever used a local party kit for your kids' birthdays or family gatherings? Or maybe you'd love to set one up for our area? Let me know in the comments! 👇

Ever heard of a wind-up radio? And did you know that its brilliant inventor lived right on Eel Pie Island?
In 1991, Trevor Baylis was watching a television programme about the spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa. He realised that the best way to stop the disaster was through educational radio broadcasts. The problem? Vast parts of the continent had no electricity, and batteries were far too expensive.
His solution was pure genius. He went into his workshop on Eel Pie Island and combined a toy car motor, a clockwork mechanism from an old video recorder, and a hand crank.
Winding the crank for just a few seconds tightened an internal spring. As the spring slowly unwound, it turned a small generator that powered the radio – completely eliminating the need for electricity or batteries.
That unique, problem-solving mindset was stitched into everything he did. He even built his eccentric island home, 'The Haven', to be completely flood-proof!
Because the River Thames is tidal, Trevor came up with a brilliant, upside-down solution. He dug out a massive indoor swimming pool right inside his front door, and then used all that excavated soil to build a custom flood barrier at the back of the property.
His incredible technology is still heavily used today by humanitarian organisations in off-grid communities, and by campers and survivalists all over the world.

It’s amazing to think such a world-changing gadget was born on a tiny Thames island. Do you keep a wind-up radio in your camping gear or emergency kit at home? Let me know!
