At our Speaker Meeting today Martin Lloyd had us captivated with his impressive talk entitled ‘Passports, Assassins, Traitors and Spies’. Three intriguing stories of passports and their influential role in the course of history. Who knew there was such treacherous dealings behind the development of passports over the course of time?
Our thanks to Martin for entertaining us so wonderfully.

Our cycle ride today was out to Irlam Station Cafe. Not too bright on the way there, but a warming drink and sandwiches were enjoyed whilst the rain cleared outside. The weather was far better on the way back – the sun put in an appearance for us as we cycled along the Trans Pennine Trail back to Lymm.

Wild Things swapped day for night for this month’s meeting. As dusk arrived we waited at the water’s edge, keen-eyed and sharp-eared, detectors at the ready. With an expert on hand, we tuned in to a likely frequency and soon heard the unmistakeable ‘pulse’ of foraging bats. In no time at all we were able to see numerous bats flying to and fro over the water in their pursuit of prey. Rob, our ecologist and bat expert, helped us identify 3-4 bat species with perhaps more to come once the data is analysed.

What a magical evening!

The sun came out and the day warmed up just in time for the Gardening Group’s visit to the unusual gardens of Swineyard Hall on Thursday afternoon. First, we were treated to sweetly perfumed large azaleas, first planted in the 1950s; then crossed the bridge over the moat to continue around the house to see lovely flowerbeds; courtyard; orchard and greenhouse. We were treated to coffee, tea and homemade cakes and scones. What an afternoon!!
Many thanks to the owners for sharing their garden with us and telling stories of their restoration of this beautiful 13th/14th century house.

The cycling group enjoyed a ride to Broadheath. Blue sky and gentle breeze made for a pleasant ride. Maybe an extra 200yds added to the ride length as we made a slight mistake on following the planned route!
