Set: In a luxury hotel suite, September 1934
Format: Fast-paced, high-energy screwball farce with mistaken identity. Requires excellent comedic timing, physical humor, and door-slamming precision!
Premise: When a world-famous, unpredictable Italian diva becomes unexpectedly incapacitated right before the Grand Opera’s biggest night, a timid assistant must step out of the shadows and into the spotlight to save the show.
MAIN CHARACTERS
4 Female / 3 male / 1 gender neutral
Jo: 30 plus. A quiet, mousy assistant to the opera manager who dreams of singing. When chaos hits, she is forced to step into the spotlight disguised as the opera diva. 240 lines.
Lucille Wylie: 50s plus.The clever and fiery general manager of the Grand Opera Company. She is tough, stressed and will do absolutely anything to make sure the gala performance happens. 210 lines.
Elena Firenzi: 40s plus. A larger than life, world-class, glamorous opera diva who arrives late and sparks total madness. Speaks with an Italian accent. 170 lines.
Pasquale: 40s plus. Elena's fiery, deeply passionate and fiercely jealous husband. He causes major dramatic scenes. Speaks with an Italian accent. 130 lines.
Jerry: 30s plus. A sweet, romantic lawyer who is Jo's boyfriend. He gets swept up in the backstage panic. Always in the wrong place at the wrong time ie inside cupboards, locked bathrooms etc. 160 lines.
Leo: 40s plus. A smooth-talking tenor with a big ego and big stage presence. Suave, attractive, and incredibly conceited. He uses his charm to pursue anything that moves. Speaks with a Dutch accent. 80 lines.
Julia: 50s plus. Chairwoman of the Opera Guild and a wealthy grand dame of high society. Dressed to the nines, pretentious, and desperate to rub elbows with celebrity royalty. Excellent comedic punchlines. 55 lines.
The Bellhop: Any Age, Any Gender. An energetic, starstruck hotel employee adds to the fast-paced confusion. Excellent role for a physical comedian who can steal a scene. 80 lines.
