A weekend of learning and a warm welcome to new faces at Shrewsbury Street Pastors! 💙

A group of our current volunteers took part in first aid training, while we welcomed a whole host of new volunteers for Ascension Trust Roles and Responsibilities training. It was lovely to be joined by new volunteers from Worcester Street Pastors and Stafford Street Pastors too!

Thank you to everyone who gave their time to train, learn and prepare to care for others in our communities. We’re so grateful for the commitment and compassion of our volunteers, both new and experienced. 🙌

💭 Myth versus reality: what do Street Pastors really do?

You may recognise us by our blue uniforms—or perhaps by the flip-flops and lollipops in our bags—but there is much more to being a Street Pastor.

We listen without judgement, offer practical help and support anyone who feels vulnerable, lost, distressed or simply needs someone to talk to. We work alongside the police, emergency services, venues, taxi marshals and other local partners to help keep Shrewsbury safe and welcoming.

Our work also reaches beyond Saturday-night patrols. We undertake regular training, deliver safety talks, attend community events and engage with young people to help prevent harm before it happens.

Rainbow over Shifnal this evening - couldn't resist sending up my drone 🙂

I used a DJI Mini 5 Pro to take this panoramic picture. The drone camera isn't wide enough to capture it in one shot, so I pointed the drone camera in 18 different positions. However, each position was bracketed (lighter and darker pictures to keep details in the highlights and shadows), so it was 5 pictures for each position, resulting in 90 pictures.

📊 Behind every number is a person

Since January, our volunteers have given approximately 684.49 hours of service to Shrewsbury—an estimated contribution of £8,699.82 when valued at the National Living Wage.

Those figures matter, but they cannot fully describe what happens during a patrol.

They cannot show the relief of someone being reunited with friends, the reassurance of having a calm person remain beside you while waiting for an ambulance, or the comfort of being listened to during a mental-health crisis. They cannot capture what it means to help someone reach home safely, support a person at risk near the river or work alongside the emergency services when a life may be in danger.

On our most recent patrol, five volunteers gave a combined 35 hours of their time. They made 37 contacts, responded to three incidents and helped four people reach safety.

Alongside this potentially life-changing support, the team quietly offered practical care—including water, hot drinks, food and footwear—and removed potentially dangerous glass and containers from the streets.

Street Pastors are present at moments when kindness, calmness and a willingness to listen can change the direction of someone’s night—and sometimes much more.

Every hour is freely given. Every person is treated with dignity. Every encounter is met without judgement.

This is what it means to listen, care and help. 💙

💙 Could you be a Street Pastor?

You don’t need to have all the answers or come from a particular professional background. Some of the qualities that make a good Street Pastor are beautifully simple:

💙 Kindness towards everyone you meet
🕊️ Calmness when situations become difficult
⏰ Reliability and commitment to your team
👂 A willingness to listen without judgement

Our volunteers receive comprehensive training to prepare them for patrol. This develops practical skills and covers the different situations they may encounter while listening, caring and helping on Shrewsbury’s streets. Training and ongoing support continue throughout your time with the team.

If you’re curious but not yet ready to commit, you may be able to join a patrol as an observer. It’s an opportunity to meet the team, experience a night first-hand and decide whether the role feels right for you.

Street Pastors are Christian volunteers putting their faith into action and working alongside local partners to help make Shrewsbury’s nights safer and more welcoming.

💙 As Shrewsbury wakes up this Sunday morning…

Many of our Street Pastors are returning home after serving through the night. In just a few hours, most will be getting up again to join their church communities—tired, perhaps, but grateful for another night spent listening, caring and helping.

Their commitment is rooted in faith: a faith expressed through practical action, without judgement and offered freely to everyone. It is a commitment to God, to volunteering and to the people who live, work and enjoy nights out in Shrewsbury.

This quiet, faithful service is at the heart of Shrewsbury Street Pastors. It also makes an important contribution to our town’s night-time economy, working alongside venues, taxi marshals, the police, emergency services and other local partners to help make Shrewsbury safer and more welcoming.

To every person we met last night, every partner we worked alongside and our whole community: you are valued, and you are loved.

And to our volunteers heading to church with tired eyes and full hearts—thank you for putting your faith into action. 💙

Our Street Pastors are out in Shrewsbury to listen, care and help without judgement. If you feel vulnerable, become separated from your friends or are worried about someone else, please come and speak to us.
