Shrewsbury Street Pastors

Shrewsbury Street Pastors A Street Pastor is a church member with a concern for society - in particular young people and who is willing to engage people where they are.

Across the country in many towns and cities Street Pastors projects have sprung up as the local church has come together to be a helping hand. In Shrewsbury the Police have approached the Churches and asked us to develop a similar scheme. Shrewsbury Street Pastors aims to have a team of at least 3 people working together out on the streets within the river loop from 10pm-4am. These will be linked

by radio to pub/club doorstaff, the town’s CCTV system and the emergency services in order to help vulnerable people. Ways of helping include being friendly, showing care and finding out what the issues are. Helping people access correct medical services or arranging a taxi or a lift home. Providing water and snacks, or a hot drink / blanket in cold weather, and even flip-flops for ladies who can't wear high heels any longer! There are currently at least 20 Churches supporting this project with clear support from many others and inter-church organisations. The Ascension Trust, which administers the Street Pastor Initiatives throughout the UK, has granted the licence for the Shrewsbury SPI.

Our 6th Mayors Special goes to Shrewsbury Street Pastors.

Shrewsbury Street Pastors has retained that constant compassionate presence at the heart of our town, particularly during its busiest and most vulnerable hours. As part of the wider network of Street Pastors, the Shrewsbury team gives their time voluntarily to patrol the town centre on weekend evenings, providing practical care, reassurance, and calm support to those who may be distressed, intoxicated, lost, or at risk. Their presence significantly contributes to public safety while also embodying kindness and dignity. With Flip-flops and a lollipop they have the ability to de-escalate tensions before they become serious incidents. They work respectfully alongside local partners including West Mercia Police, the Town Rangers & Taxi Marshals, door staff, and other emergency services, helping to reduce pressure on frontline resources while strengthening collaborative community safety. Their practical interventions foster a culture of care. They listen without judgement. They treat every person they encounter as worthy of respect. In doing so, they help make Shrewsbury’s night-time economy not only safer, but more humane.

We were honoured and privileged to attend the presentation of the Shropshire European Organisation CIC King’s Award. In 2025, the organisation received the King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS), a prestigious recognition of its exceptional voluntary work in the community, especially in supporting and integrating the European community within Shropshire and nearby areas. The award celebrates the remarkable impact that can be achieved when people work together to support their community.

might have been discredited as a bit of a myth after the 'formula' used to identify the saddest day of the year was shown to be little more than a way of encouraging people to book holidays.

But, what if we brought Blue Monday back but made it a POSITIVE thing instead?

You might have noticed blue is *our* colour at Shrewsbury Street Pastors.

So today, on Blue Monday, we're asking you whether you can support us by:

🔷 Spreading the word - let friends, colleagues, anyone you know who goes out in Shrewsbury that if they need help for any reason we're here for them.

🔷 Liking, sharing and commenting on our posts - this again helps more people find out about us.

🔷 Donating - we're a small charity which relies on kind funders, so if you are able to donate then we are truly grateful.

🔷 Volunteering - if you can spare approximately one night a month to help us (and you're over 18, able to get to Shrewsbury town centre, and a regular attendee at a church) then why not enquire about volunteering?

📣 A special announcement from Shrewsbury Street Pastors 📣

We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Paul Bell as our new CEO.

Paul has lots of experience in, and a deep commitment to, faith-led community work including having been a Shrewsbury Street Pastor for the past decade.

In recognition of 12 years of outstanding service to the organisation, our outgoing CEO Steve Jones has been appointed as our charity's patron.

We thank both Paul and Steve for their ongoing contribution to the Street Pastors, and look forward to the excellent work you will no doubt continue to do in your new roles.

Today Steve and Merryn from Shrewsbury Street Pastors had the pleasure of speaking to Trinity Table about the work we do, how to volunteer, and the fantastic partnerships we have in place with many other organisations.

If your group would like to hear from us, do send us a message and we'd be happy to come along and chat about the Street Pastors!
