With just three weeks to go until our Model Railway Exhibition on the 26th, here's another layout to tempt you.

Rob Score describes it:
'Although St Levan is a real location near the south Cornwall coast it never had a railway. This 3mm scale model is a typical fictitious GWR/WR Branch Line Terminus station with a run round loop served by a single autocoach train. The goods yard comprises a short siding off the loop and longer one to the goods shed. There is a kick back siding serving a small dairy/creamery, behind which is the hidden fiddle yard. This configuration results in a self-contained, compact single 5ft board layout.

The model was originally built by the late Nigel Cullimore, close friends of whom on his passing decided to refurbish the layout in his memory. This was carried out by SWMRC club member Kelly Miller, who created both Pine Road and Exton Quay.'

Shillingstone station will open specially this August Bank Holiday Monday, and we’re looking forward to greeting new visitors and regulars alike.
And you can now enjoy a pasty, sandwich or scrumptious home-made cake in the newly re-furbished ‘General Utility Van’, popularly known as GUV.
GUV was built in Scotland in 1959 to carry mail but was later converted to transport cars, with opening doors at each end for driving them on. Luckily for us, because we could make use of one end to create a ‘Van with a View’.
It’s taken volunteers five years, but GUV is now fully fitted out with vintage tables and chairs, and decorated with a fascinating collection of period cast iron notices, enamel signs, and technical drawings.
The station is open all weekend from 10:00am to 4:00pm and entry is free. (Though donations are very welcome!)

Last Monday we provided exclusive hire of the station and facilities for an 80th birthday celebration. Caterers 'Stur of the Moment' did a great job, laying on a cold lunchtime buffet for 25 guests, then afternoon cream teas for 60.

Several of the guests had travelled from abroad and were very impressed with the location as an unusual party venue. Many had family connections to Shillingstone and were amazed with the restoration progress that we have achieved at the railway, some even having travelled on the line before its closure.

On Sunday, the Bournemouth Scooter Club dropped in for a visit. In case you're having a 'Honey, I Shrank the Campervan' moment, it's actually a customised scooter-trailer.

The station is always popular with two wheel clubs having a ride out, though we do appreciate it if big groups let us have a bit of warning so that we can make their visit as good an experience as we can.

Another tempting preview of what you can see at the station's Model Railway exhibition on September 26th. This is Steve Green's 'Lulworth Castle', and this is how he describes it:

'A small branch line terminus connecting with the LSWR/SR at Norden on the Swanage branch. The branch serves the tourist traffic to Lulworth Castle, local industries at Tyneham Works and the Lulworth Camp Military Railway. The layout can be operated as either LSWR, Southern Railway or BR(S) steam, BR Blue diesels or as the Lulworth Military Railway (LMR).

'The whole layout packs away in the two cabinets it sits on top of, which has been produced using a built-in fridge/freezer unit carcass, which then stack on top of each other for storage purposes at home, thus resembling a piece of furniture.'

This is Michaela, a metal fabrication and blacksmithing student at Kingston Maurward Agricultural College, who has joined the North Dorset Railway for work experience with the station's welding and metalworking team. She's holding a bowl she has made while at the station.

The Station welcomes young people (14+) to join our team, so if you are a young person interested in railways, or woodwork, or horticulture, or catering or... well the list goes on... why not come along, bring a parent or guardian, have a look around, chat to anyone in orange high-vis.

(Unless they're about to do something requiring concentration!)

The station is open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10am to 4pm and entry is free, but the best day to see the range of activities the volunteers get up to is Wednesday.

Just over five weeks to go until North Dorset Railway's Model Railway Exhibition on September 26th. Here's another layout you'll be able to see, Steve Croucher's 00 gauge Heath Road. It's inspired by the Kent & East Sussex Railway, and marks Steve's return to layout building after more than 30 years.
