Aber Valley Heritage

Aber Valley Heritage Aber Valley Heritage Group is a charity. It is made up of a group of local volunteers who work tirelessly to preserve the heritage of the Aber Valley.

They run the Aber Valley Heritage Museum & the Welsh National Mining Memorial and Garden in Senghenydd. Aber Valley Heritage Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11:00am - 2:00pm. Please note that from November - April this is on an appointment only basis. Please email [email protected] to book your visit. Our volunteers can't wait to see you! Aber Valley Heritage Group was forme

d in 2008 by a group of local volunteers keen to preserve the mining heritage of their small valley. In 1901 and 1913, the Universal Colliery in Senghenydd was the site of 2 tragic disasters, where hundreds of men and boys lost their lives. The 15 volunteers, who form a committee with Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer meet on a monthly basis. Over the years they have continually fundraised and successfully set up both the Aber Valley Heritage Museum, and the Welsh National & Universal Mining Disaster Memorial Garden. Both of these are situated in Senghenydd. On a daily basis, they ensure that both the Museum and Memorial Garden are continuously maintained to a high standard. We were delighted to welcome a group of pupils from St Cenydd Community School to Aber Valley Heritage.

A group of 12 pupils and 5 teachers made the walk to Senghenydd, where they spent a good hour exploring the museum and learning more about our local heritage.

Afterwards, they headed up to the garden for a picnic lunch before getting stuck in and helping us tackle some of the w**ds around the heathers.

The pupils worked really well, showed great teamwork, and were a pleasure to have with us. Weโ€™d be more than happy to welcome them back anytime!

Thank you to everyone involved for a lovely visit, we hope to see you again soon. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‘

The Aber Valley Heritage Group would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Senghenydd Sirens on an incredible achievement!

Securing a second consecutive treble-winning season is a remarkable accomplishment, and to add promotion to the top tier makes it even more special. Winning the league and two domestic cups once is impressive, doing it again demonstrates the dedication, talent and determination that this team has in abundance.

We are immensely proud to have such outstanding ambassadors representing our area. The Senghenydd Sirens continue to inspire not only through their success on the rugby field but also through the example they set for women and young girls across our community. They show what can be achieved through hard work, teamwork and belief in your abilities.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the club on this historic season. You have done Senghenydd and the wider Aber Valley proud, and we wish you every success as you take on the challenge of top-tier rugby.

๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ† Congratulations, Sirens!

A huge thank you to the Menโ€™s Shed for once again coming to the rescue and supporting the community.

Not only did they paint the fence, clean the stonework, and clear w**ds and other debris from around the Windsor Colliery Memorial, they also kindly supplied us with two compost bins for our garden.

Amazing work and community spirit from a fantastic group of volunteers, your help is truly appreciated by everyone at Aber Valley Heritage Group. ๐Ÿ‘

If youโ€™re interested in joining the Menโ€™s Shed Group, they meet at the YMCA every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 12pm. New members are always welcome. Make a difference ๐Ÿ˜Š.

Today we at the Aber Valley Heritage remember the men and boys lost in the 1901 Universal Colliery disaster in Senghenydd, one of the many tragedies that shaped the history of the South Wales coalfield.

Their lives, courage, and sacrifice remain an important part of the heritage of the Aber Valley and our mining communities. We also remember the families and rescuers whose lives were changed forever by this devastating event.

As we reflect on this day, we honour not only those who perished, but the resilience and strength of the community that endured unimaginable loss.
