Wild East Devon Wild East Devon manage ten Nature Reserves from Axminster to Exmouth including the award-winning Seaton Wetlands. Our events programme comes out twice a year.

We operate a thriving outdoor learning service and deliver great public events for all ages. The team deliver practical habitat management, provide a range of volunteering opportunities, deliver an inspiring educational service to schools and community groups, and deliver and promote exciting outdoor events with numerous partnering organisations. 🦋🍂 Have you spotted a Comma butterfly, Polygonia c-album?

With its ragged wing edges, this fascinating butterfly looks just like a dead leaf when resting, making it brilliantly camouflaged. You'll often find it along woodland edges or feeding on fallen fruit in gardens.

Did you know? 🤓 Commas that emerge in early summer are much paler than those seen later in the year. The lighter butterflies produce a second brood, while the darker form spends the winter hibernating as an adult.

🖤🦢 It's been a lovely surprise to see a Black Swan, Cygnus atratus spending time with the mute swans on the River Axe in recent weeks!

Native to Australia, black swans are often kept as ornamental birds and occasionally turn up in the wild, usually as lone individuals. While they're becoming a more familiar sight on the River Exe, it's been a real treat to spot one here at Seaton Wetlands.

✨ Another stunning leucistic bird at Seaton Wetlands! ✨

Many of you will be familiar with Lucy the leucistic blackbird, but she's not our only unusually coloured resident! Recently, we've been treated to sightings of a beautiful leucistic Reed Warbler, looking absolutely striking among the reeds.

Leucism is a rare condition that causes a partial loss of pigmentation, resulting in pale or white feathers while the bird retains its normal eye colour 🤍

🦇 Happy International Bat Night - 29-30 August! 🦇

Did you know the UK is home to 18 species of bat, with 17 breeding? That means bats make up almost a quarter of all our native mammal species!

Every summer, thousands of people head outdoors to experience the magic of watching bats emerge at dusk. These fascinating mammals play a vital role in our ecosystems, but sadly many bat populations have declined dramatically over the last century.

The good news? 💚 The Bat Conservation Trust and more than 80 local bat groups are working hard to protect these incredible creatures and their habitats.

Why not celebrate International Bat Night by learning more about bats, joining a local event, or finding out how you can help?

🧡 A very special visitor has dropped into Seaton Wetlands! 🧡

Over the last few days, we've been lucky enough to host a Red-necked Phalarope, Phalaropus lobatus, a beautiful little wader that's been delighting birdwatchers and visitors alike.

Unlike most waders, phalaropes prefer to swim out on the water rather than forage along the shoreline. With their pot-bellied bodies, long necks, short legs and fine needle-like bills, they're one of the most distinctive and fascinating birds you're ever likely to see.
