15. Neuter

We advocate neutering kittens by 4 months old because they are just so good at making even more kittens! We work with vets across our area to ensure that this vital step is carried out at the right time. We all love kittens but there are just too many needing our care and so we would ask everyone to please neuter your cats, both boys and girls.

14. Microchip

If a cat is handed in as a stray we are delighted if it has a microchip. And even more so if the contact details are up to date as it makes it easy to reunite cats with their owners. We make sure our kittens are microchipped at the right time. Don’t forget that it is a legal requirement to microchip pet cats before they are 20 weeks old.

https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/caring-for-your-cat/neutering-and-vaccinations/microchipping-your-cat

We have needed to pay our vets for the microchips, fuel to get the kittens to and from the vets and appropriate cat carriers to keep them safe during transport. Please donate if you can. https://www.justgiving.com/page/honiton-cats-protection-chocolateboxkittens?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL

Needs to happen by the time the kitties are 20 weeks old. older 07.09 14.09

13. Vaccination

Vaccination is so important to keep cats and kittens healthy throughout their lives. We start vaccination at 8 - 9 weeks and ensure they have the second part of the course 3 - 4 weeks later. Once rehomed their owners are responsible for the annual booster vaccination.

https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/caring-for-your-cat/neutering-and-vaccinations/vaccinations

We have needed to pay our vets for provision of the vaccinations, fuel to get the kittens to and from the vets and appropriate cat carriers to keep them safe during transport.

Vaccination usually happens around 9 weeks of age

If you can help with the cost of vaccinations we would be very greatful if you could consider donating here : https://bit.ly/4ys31wc

Vaccinating your cat is important to protect them against certain illnesses, such as cat flu. Read more about vaccinations in our free guide.

12. Playing

Play is such an important part of development. In the wild kittens would be learning how to hunt to survive with prey brought back by their mothers. In the pens it’s a bit more civilised with soft toys to carry, balls to chase, scratching posts to climb and the ever reliable boxes to jump in and out of. Fishing rod toys are a firm favourite but do take care not to leave these out without supervision as they could easily get wrapped around a kitten.

Of course the best toys are apparently each other with wrestling matches an increasing feature of play as they grow.

Don’t forget to keep on playing with your cats as they get older too.

We have needed to buy appropriate cat toys, scratch poles, balls, toys that encourage them to run and jump

11. Socialisation

Kittens learn about life at a very young age and so the period to introduce them to things they will encounter later is in the crucial period 2 - 7 weeks of age. We use the radio and have different people come into the pens to get them used to life and looking forward to being lovely relaxed cats in the future.

https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/pregnancy-and-kitten-care/kitten-socialisation

Thank you for the donation of a radio. We have needed to pay for electricity to keep it running.

If you are able please donate here https://bit.ly/4ys31wc

10. Split

Arriving altogether as they did the kittens started off sharing a pen. It helped that the bigger ones led the littler ones towards food and litter trays and so was much appreciated as they grew. However, we would not mix kitten litters and so after a couple of weeks we split the bigger three into a separate pen, giving everyone more room to play. Of course that means another pen to clean….😹

We have needed to buy appropriate cat pens so that our fosterers can provide the best care for all our cats and kittens

Chocolate Box Kittens

9. Warmth

Kittens can quickly become cold and usually mum would be cuddled around them. We make sure they have a nice warm pen area, soft bedding and a heat pad under the bed to keep them cosy. Choices of beds are available to ensure that no one gets overheated. Although the best way to keep warm can be in a pile of kittens.

We have needed to buy suitable bedding and pay for electricity to keep the pens heated

8. Food development

The kittens were too little to be away from mum and so we needed to use kitten milk to get them growing.

Initially this is done with a bottle but as they get bigger they have some in a bowl.

Fresh water is available and they soon started to investigate that - sometimes with their paws.

Small bite kitten biscuits were left for them to explore and as soon as the older ones started to investigate those we introduced kitten ‘mush’.

Normally kittens will follow their mums and imitate them at the food bowl to learn but in this case we relied on the older three to show the little ones the way to go.

We then introduced some kitten meat pouches, initially mixed with the mush, to move on to proper kitten food.

As they have little tummies they need to eat little and often. The kitten biscuits are left for them to graze as they wish and we move to four mealtimes with meat. Kitten milk has continued as a last thing at night addition to encourage a sleepy bedtime.

We have needed to buy specialist kitten food to transition onto solid food and kitten wet food and biscuits, appropriate feeding and water bowls, disinfectant to keep them clean

If you are able, please donate: https://bit.ly/4ys31wc
