Last week's recipe was aimed at using things in the fridge and also ingredients donated to us FareShare Yorkshire and Asda - because sometimes you just have to use up what you've got!

So we whipped up hasselback potatoes with yummy tuna crunch and a green salad.
The hasselback potatoes really tested our knife skills and patience as we had to thinly slice them but not all the way through - they were so worth it though!

This was followed with James’ mum's recipe for bread pudding, complete with tea bag!!!! We hope everyone enjoyed sharing it with their families and friends either hot or cold with a cup of tea ☕☺️

Last week we decided to try ’little fish’ spaghetti with bruschetta and gremolata topping. Initial feedback on seeing the little fish (or tinned sardines as they are also known) was not always positive. But everyone tried them and the feedback from most was 10/10.

This was followed later with cheese scones and a long discussion on how best to pronounce them.

Last week we made our own baguettes which we used to make Swiss Chicken and Cheese Sliders with a side of healthy coleslaw!

After lunch we followed it up by making Egg Custards where we had a lot of fun separating the egg whites from the yolks 😅🥚

Last week felt like the start of summer at Skills Kitchen as we enjoyed our first outdoor meal on the decking. There’s something uplifting about eating in the sunshine, and we’re looking forward to many more days like this ☀️😎

The menu, that our learners made for themselves, was a true taste of summer: a beautiful Quiche Lorraine served with fresh salad and a finely sliced Potato Galette.

And because no sunny lunch is complete without something sweet, we all enjoyed baking chocolate cakes, perfect for sharing with friends and family.

We had such a lovely time in Skills Kitchen last week revisiting one of our all‑time favourite recipes. Originally shared with us by Jamie from The Butcher’s Tap & Grill, this dish first made an appearance when our learners recreated it to raise funds for our much‑loved charity, Action For Sport ⚽🏏🏉🎾

This time, it was all about pure enjoyment — and what a treat it was.

As always our learners made their own meals with the guidance of James and Simon. The jerk chicken burgers with fries, smoky cheese, pineapple salsa and spicy mayo were so good that everyone wanted seconds!

And just when we thought it couldn’t get better, we finished with an upside‑down hazelnut cheesecake.

A delicious day all round 😋

Even with a smaller group this week, Skills Kitchen was full of good food and good company.
Everyone made two leek and cheese tarts from scratch, complete with enriched pastry and a side of crispy wedges — one to enjoy together, and one to share at home. We finished with chocolate cornflake Easter nests for a sweet Easter touch.
Spring is here, and we can’t wait to be able to get back outside and eat alfresco soon!

🌟 It’s been a wonderfully busy week at Skills Kitchen in Saltaire! We were delighted to welcome a fantastic work‑placement student from Titus Salt School, who jumped straight into the action with us.

🍅 What sounded like a simple menu turned into a brilliant hands‑on session — homemade tomato soup paired with fresh, cheese‑filled spicy bread buns. And although we were far too busy to snap photos of the amazing apple and plum turnovers, trust us… they were worth every minute of that early‑morning rough‑puff prep.

💛 Watching everyone grow in confidence and independence in the kitchen is what Skills Kitchen is all about. Now we’re already wondering… what delicious Easter puddings will we create next!

Fish pie with carrots and peas was on the menu this week. It might sound simple, but our cooks know it’s anything but — from making the parsley sauce to sneaking in leeks and boiled eggs alongside that lovely white fish and seafood, all finished with a topping of golden mashed potatoes.

For pudding, everyone created a gingery plum cake to share with family and friends.

We’ve tried to capture the joy of Skills Kitchen in this week’s videos, and we hope they’re as fun to watch as they were to make.

Sending warm wishes to all our friends who have been celebrating Ramadan and Eid — Eid Mubarak, even if a little belated.
