After last year's very poor breeding season for barn owls across the South of England which was attributed by experts to a crash in the vole population, we were pleased to find a number of our nest boxes had chicks this year. Recently I assisted two licensed bird recorders with fitting owlets from two boxes where they were large enough, with their unique identification rings, taking measurements and weighing them. This assists in finding out how far these birds travel, what happens to them in the future and information on their development.

I recently had a break from Stansted and indeed trees with a week walking in the North York Moors National Park. Perhaps it is my upbringing near the Fenlands of Cambridgeshire, but I find expansive, open landscapes very restorative.
The high moors of Yorkshire also have alongside their rugged beauty, bounteous wildlife especially ground nesting birds. We saw numerous red grouse with their chicks, the plaintive call of the curlew was everywhere and lapwing and golden plover were also seen. The management carried out on these moors creates a perfect habitat for species rapidly disappearing elsewhere in our countryside such as curlew and lapwing.
We had a pair of lapwing arrive on site at Stansted this spring and look as though they were going to breed, though unfortunately they subsequently disappeared. Afterwards, I noticed something glinting in the sun in the area they were settling in and on investigation found a number of empty beer cans strewn about, so they might have been disturbed by thoughtless behaviour at the critical time and moved off site.

Stansted Park is home to the UK Field Gun Academy who have revived the Field Gun Sport for a new generation. Watch in awe as teams race to compete against each other and the clock by pushing, pulling, carrying and lifting the gun and limber over an obstacles course. The competition originated when Queen Victoria gave the sailors of her fleet the privilege of marching through London with their guns on display. One thing led to another and before too long it turned into a sport where crews would race against each other.

We retained this dying ash tree last autumn even though it was in the middle of the area we would subsequently replant as there was a wild bee's nest in it. On checking it today I found they had wintered well and were very active. When it finally succumbs, the tree should stand dead for a number of years and so will provide a habitat for the bees and many other creatures. When it finally falls it will damage some of the new plantation but that is a small price to pay for giving the bees a home for as long as possible.

Yellow Archangel, sometimes called Yellow Dead Nettle is a member of the mint family and the only one with yellow flowers. As the bluebells fade this plant appears in parts of the forest and woodland edges and is an indicator of ancient woodland sites. It is a favourite plant of mine as it was very common throughout the woodland nature reserve where I worked as a voluntary warden many years ago for the old Nature Conservancy Council and where I learned a great deal about woodlands and their ecology, happy memories.
