PLANETS Charity helps patients with pancreatic, liver, colorectal, abdominal, Upper GI and NET cancer Help us to raise money to make a difference!

PLANETS Cancer Charity is dedicated to serving the needs of our regional population which extends from Lyme Regis to Bognor Regis and provides specialist cancer services to the 4 million people who live across Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and West Sussex. PLANETS ethos is based around two fundamental principles: Firstly, supporting our patients and their families by working together as a “whole team” with the doctors, nurses and other medical staff using the motivation of fundraising alongside our patients to help them fight cancer through the positive energy that this camaraderie creates. Secondly, we use the money that has been raised to provide the “icing on the cake“ by funding things that the NHS otherwise could not afford and stimulating innovation in cancer care through research and the introduction of new treatments. PLANETS is more than just another local cancer charity, it is a motivating and unifying force that is changing the way that we approach the fight against cancer across the central south coast of England. Our aim is not just to save lives but also to enrich them in the process by helping the “whole team” to focus together on our shared goals. Last September, James was admitted to hospital with severe stomach pains. Following three and a half weeks in hospital, he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer.

Since his diagnosis, James has undergone treatment and major surgery, and continues to navigate his recovery.

In his story, James shares his experience of diagnosis and treatment, the support he's received along the way and the role PLANETS has played in his journey.

We're pleased to share James's experience and give an insight into his journey from his own perspective.

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month 💜

This month, we're shining a light on pancreatic cancer and supporting the Purple Lights Campaign, helping to raise awareness, remember those we've lost and stand alongside everyone currently fighting.

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the toughest cancers to diagnose, with symptoms that can often be difficult to recognise.

The Purple Lights Campaign is a chance for individuals, businesses and communities to come together, turn their homes and workplaces purple, and show their support.

Every light helps spark a conversation. Every conversation helps raise awareness.

Have you heard of Interventional Oncology?

There are so many different approaches to treating cancer, and some are much less invasive than you might expect.

Interventional Oncology includes a range of targeted treatments that can offer patients additional options, particularly when surgery isn't possible.

Our Chairman, Neil Pearce, often says that at PLANETS, we like to ‘put the icing on the cake’.

While this usually refers to the additional treatment and support we help provide for patients, we like to bring that same approach to our fundraising!

Diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer in 2023, Ben Pincus was initially told his cancer was inoperable and began treatment to slow the growth of multiple tumours in his liver.

However, following specialist care and further treatment, including Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) (which Ben paid for privately) he was able to undergo major surgery in April 2025.

In September 2026, Ben received the incredible news that his latest scans showed no evidence of tumours.

While Ben's story is one of hope, it also highlights why our ongoing campaign for NHS access to SIRT is so important.

Ben was fortunate enough to be able to fund his treatment privately, but many patients simply don't have that option.

At PLANETS, we believe that eligible patients should have access to potentially life-changing treatments based on their clinical needs, not their ability to pay.

With more than 49,000 people supporting our petition, we are continuing to push for change and ensure patients' voices are heard.

Did you know that PLANETS has funded a robotic ultrasound probe for use in specialist liver and pancreatic cancer surgery at Southampton General Hospital?

But what does this actually mean for patients?

The probe attaches directly to one of the surgical robot's arms, allowing surgeons to perform ultrasound scans from inside the body during complex keyhole procedures.

This gives surgeons a highly detailed picture of exactly where a tumour is positioned in relation to vital structures, including blood vessels, helping them navigate these delicate operations with greater precision.

It's an incredible investment in technology that supports the surgical teams here in Southampton and the patients they care for.

When we think about cancer symptoms, we often think of lumps, unexplained weight loss or pain. But sometimes, the signs can be much more subtle.

For the cancers we support here at PLANETS, symptoms can include:

- Persistent bloating or abdominal discomfort
- Changes in bowel habits
- Unexplained fatigue
- Loss of appetite or feeling full quickly
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
- Persistent indigestion or back pain

These symptoms don't necessarily mean cancer and can be caused by many other conditions. However, if something is unusual for you, persists or is getting worse, it's important to speak to your GP.

You know your body better than anyone. If something doesn't feel right, don't ignore it.

What started as a suspected water infection turned into a life-changing diagnosis for Clare.

After developing itchy skin and jaundice, blood tests revealed unusually high bilirubin levels. Further investigations led to a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.

Clare went on to undergo two major operations and chemotherapy, and we're delighted to share that she later received the news that she was cancer-free.
