A lovely graphic from our friends in Canada!

👏🏼 We really liked this graphic tile from FASD Network of Northern California outlining a recent study of mental health issues for foster / adoptive parents of tamariki and rangatahi with FASD.

The research confirmed the multiple hidden extras we know about that go with caring for a neurodivergent kid. But it also showed conclusively that the biggest protective factor for mums (who most often take the lion's share of the load) is support from their partners. 💛

Sharing the caregiving and advocacy as well as practical and emotional support were all listed as highly effective ways to combat many stress factors and mitigate or avoid adverse mental health issues.

👉🏼 Read the research here: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10926755.2025.2583535

👉🏼 And if your male partner is interested in the points of view of a bunch of other dads caring for adoptive children with FASD, see our webinar recording from earlier this year here: https://www.fasd-can.org.nz/fasd-can-webinar-recordings

Well worth a read!

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong condition — but it doesn’t look the same at every stage of life.

From infancy through to adulthood, people with FASD may experience a range of challenges with:
• learning and memory
• attention and impulse control
• communication and social relationships
• understanding consequences and daily life skills

These characteristics can change over time and are often misunderstood — which is why FASD is sometimes called a hidden disability.

Every individual is different. With the right understanding, supports, and environment, people with FASD can thrive.

💡 When we understand behaviour as brain-based, we can respond with empathy — not judgement.
