It’s Volunteers Week and at Read Easy Medway we are so proud of the people who give their time, energy and dedication to help us.
Read Easy Medway is a local charity run by volunteers that helps adults learn to read – it’s free, one-to-one and confidential.
There are 2.4 million adults in England who can’t read at all or can barely read. Last year 2,245 volunteers gave more than 370,000 hours to help Read Easy UK.
Would you like to become a volunteer with Read Easy Medway and change people’s lives?
We are always looking to recruit more coaches for our readers.
And we are looking to fill two roles on our Management Team, a Treasurer and a Data Protection Champion.
The roles would require no more than a couple of hours a week, often less, with one online meeting every month.
If you would like to use a little of your spare time to make a real difference, please get in touch.
Read Easy Medway is supported by the National Lottery.

Paula has shared her story about learning to read with Read Easy in this week’s Woman’s Own magazine.
She said: “Reading was still a struggle day to day. Street signs, food shopping, recipes – I couldn’t read any of them.
“Whenever we went out to restaurants I couldn’t even read the menu.
“After two years I was able to read a book for the first time and I was so proud.
“Now I love reading everything, from signs to labels, and I order what I like from the menu!”
We’re proud of you too, Paula!
There are 2.4 million people in England who can’t read at all or can barely read. You can help us change the lives of people like Paula.

What a fabulous effort from Read Easy North and West Wiltshire, who held their annual celebration this week with two of their readers.
Jackie has been learning with the group since December 2021, and meets her coach Maggie twice a week for her coaching sessions.
Jackie said: “I can feel more confident now and take part in more activities, such as arts and crafts, and skittles. And I can read signs and menus.”
She loves animals and can also now check the task rota at Larkrise Community Farm, where she volunteers – mucking out the horses and donkeys, grooming them and chopping up their food.
Because of Jackie’s interest in animals, Maggie has found her books about horses, dogs and rabbits to help encourage her to read more.
The event also heard from Gail, who works with her coach John.
Gail is becoming so confident, she is starting to help other people with their reading, and can properly enjoy karaoke sessions.
John said the volunteer experience “has been everything I hoped for and more. I really enjoy seeing Gail make progress.”
The picture shows Trowbridge coordinator Claire, reader Jackie and coach Maggie.

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and at Read Easy Medway we believe that learning to read can boost your wellbeing and self-esteem – as does helping others to do it.
Read Easy Medway is a local charity that helps adults learn to read – it’s free, one-to-one and fully confidential.
There are 2.4 million people in England who can’t read at all or can barely read.
We offer a life-changing service: learning to read gives you the chance to enhance your career prospects and be more confident in the workplace.
It also helps you to stay in touch with your family and friends, and makes you feel more comfortable when you’re out and about.
And learning to read means you can help your own children to do the same.
Do you know someone who wants help with their reading? Please tell them about us.
Would you like to become a volunteer with us and change people’s lives?
The National Council for Voluntary Organisations found that more than three-quarters of volunteers (77 per cent) said volunteering improved their mental health.

Congratulations to all the winners of this year’s Pride in Medway awards, recognising unsung heroes in the community.
As the Mayor of Medway, Cllr Trevor Clarke, said: “Together these great nominees and winners make our Medway just that bit of a kinder, fairer, supportive and fulfilling place to work, live and play.”
Pride of place went to Dara Le Brunn-Moore, 11, Oliver Szczes-Tindall, 10, and Tobey Batstone, 10, who cycled 44 miles in memory of seven-year-old Sofia Le Brunn-Healey, who died last year from a rare brain cancer. They raised £3,700 for The Bluebell Circle.

Read Easy Medway helps adults learn to read – it’s free, one-to-one and fully confidential. Our coaches and Readers meet each week in spaces generously provided by our supporters.
But we are also joining in the growing trend of offering our coaching online.
In the latest set of figures, 15 per cent of Read Easy groups around the UK have introduced some online provision.
And overall there has been a 56 per cent rise in the number of readers who are opting for online coaching.
We know that many adults who want to learn to read can find it hard to meet a coach every week in person.
By expanding the amount of remote coaching we offer, Read Easy hopes to help more adults learn to read.
There are 2.4 million people in England who can’t read at all or can barely read. Do you know someone who wants help with their reading? Please tell them about us. Would you like to join us and become a coach?
