BIBS (Babies in Buscot Support)

Founded by parents in 1987, BIBS is the official charity of Buscot Ward, the RBH local neonatal unit.

Babies in Buscot Support helps sick and premature babies and their families on the local neonatal unit (Buscot Ward) at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. Our charity is run by former Buscot parents meaning we know first-hand the difference our charity makes in helping to save tiny lives and improve the experience of families who go through the stressful experience of having a sick or premature new born baby.

💜 Yesterday at our BIBS Family Support Group in Earley, the lovely Heather from Jolly Melodies Lower Earley and Arborfield ran a taster session for our families 🥳 The babies (and parents!) had lots of fun singing, moving, and playing instruments 🪇🥁 A big thank you to Heather for running this session for us 🤗

Our Family Support Groups offer a friendly and supportive opportunity for Buscot and Transitional Care families to get together. It’s a great place to share experiences, make connections, and enjoy a relaxed chat 🥰

Led by our Family Support Worker, Sammy, the sessions are free to attend and include complimentary hot drinks, sweet treats, and toys for babies and toddlers. Everyone is warmly welcome! ☕🤗🍪

Our groups run on alternate weeks at accessible venues in Tilehurst and Earley. Both are on popular bus routes and have large car parks available 🚗

As comes to a close, we want to shine a spotlight on our amazing volunteers – our wonderful Buscot Buddies 💜

From wrapping Christmas presents and handing out water on race days, to supporting our charity stalls, marshalling at the Reading Half Marathon, collecting donations in supermarkets, delivering items to Buscot Ward, cheering on Team BIBS and so much more — our volunteers are always there when it matters.

Quite simply, we couldn’t do what we do without them. Every single volunteer plays a vital role in our work and helps our tiny workforce make a real difference.

💜 June Buscot Wishlist 💜

This month, alongside our usual family room essentials - tea, coffee, sugars, biscuits and breakfast items - we’ll also be adding a few Father’s Day gifts to our wishlist 😊

For dads spending Father’s Day on the neonatal unit, these small gifts are a simple way to let them know we’re thinking of them and to make the day feel a little special. 📣 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – TESCO WOKINGHAM BUCKET COLLECTION! 🛒💜

We’re looking for volunteers to help with a bucket collection at Tesco Wokingham on Saturday 6 June. Even a couple of hours can make a huge difference!

We’re hoping to cover:
• 10am – 12.30pm x 1 volunteer
• 12pm – 2pm x 1 volunteer

Bucket collections are a brilliant way to raise vital funds and spread awareness of our work in the local community.

👟 Good luck to our 14 incredible runners taking on the Green Park 10K this Sunday morning! 👟

We can’t wait to cheer you all on as you lace up to raise vital funds helping premature and poorly babies on Buscot Ward get the best possible start in life. 💜

Our team is made up of Buscot mums, local supporters and friends from Roc Search — a true community coming together.

💜 Last week we waved a fond farewell to Dr Ann Gordon, who is retiring after nearly three decades at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Colleagues came together to celebrate the occasion over sandwiches and cakes, and to wish Ann all the very best for her retirement 💜

Dr Gordon joined RBH as a new consultant in 1997 and has dedicated her career to caring for babies and supporting families through some of the most important and challenging moments of their lives, both on Buscot and in paediatrics.

Reflecting on her time at Buscot, Ann shared how much she has loved “watching the babies grow” and seeing the incredible support the nurses give to families, helping even the most anxious parents feel confident enough to hold and care for their babies from those very early days. She spoke warmly about how wonderful it has been to later see many of those children growing up when they return to clinic.

When asked what she will miss most, Ann said: “The people and being able to have a chat - I’ve known some of my colleagues a very long time.” 💕

Retirement certainly won’t mean slowing down! Ann is looking forward to spending more time on her allotment 🌱, adventuring in her camper van with her husband and her two Irish terriers 🐾, and training her mischievous younger dog to become a Canine Good Citizen - “although I haven’t told him yet!” 😄 She’s also hoping to spend time litter picking around Reading to help keep the town tidy, so don’t be surprised if you spot her out and about with a litter picker and a big black bag!!

From everyone at BIBS, thank you Dr Gordon for your years of compassion, dedication and care for so many babies and families. We wish you a very happy and well-deserved retirement 💜✨
