30 years ago, scientists discovered BRCA genes. This finding has since given doctors a way to spot increased risk of certain cancers, including breast cancer.
Many of these people could benefit from treatments designed to lower their risk, but until now, they haven't had many options. The most effective way to prevent breast cancers linked to BRCA mutations is to completely remove the breast tissue through a mastectomy – which can be a difficult and life-changing decision.
Now, our researchers are looking for new, less invasive treatments.
Professor Walid Khaled and his team at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre are searching for the earliest signs of breast cancer in order to find new treatments to prevent it.
