One of the biggest misconceptions about taking on a Hoofbeats horse or pony is that they have been rescued from bad homes.
After all, why else would someone willingly sign over a horse or pony that could potentially be worth thousands of pounds to a charity?
Well, the truth is actually very different. ❤️
The vast majority of horses and ponies who come through our gates have been very much loved by their humans.
Sometimes life simply gets in the way.
It could be financial difficulties, personal health problems, a change in circumstances, or even the realisation that the horse they love isn't suited to the job they originally wanted them to do.
Over the years, we've had horses come to Hoofbeats that could have earned their owners thousands of pounds if they'd chosen to sell them.
But they didn't.
They chose us.
Not because their horse was worthless, unwanted or beyond hope, but because they wanted the reassurance that someone would put their horse's future before its monetary value.
And that is a responsibility we take incredibly seriously. ❤️
When a horse or pony comes to Hoofbeats, we don't look at what they were bred to do, what they've achieved, or what someone thinks they should be capable of.
We look at the horse standing in front of us.
Their personality, their quirks, their fears, their likes and dislikes, their strengths and their limitations.
We take the time to get to know them as individuals.
Because sometimes the horse that was never going to make a competition horse will make someone the most wonderful hacking companion.
Sometimes the pony that doesn't enjoy being ridden will be the most amazing little friend.
And sometimes, all a horse really wants is a peaceful life, a field, some horsey friends and a human who loves them just as they are.
The past is the past. When they come through the Hoofbeats gates, it's the beginning of a new chapter. ❤️
Our job is to find the human who wants the same things in life as that horse.
Whether that's competing, enjoying quiet hacks through the countryside, or simply sharing a lifetime of friendship.
We're incredibly proud of our success in matching horses with their humans, and the very high percentage who remain in the homes we've carefully chosen for them for the rest of their days.
That doesn't happen by accident. It happens because we take our time, we listen to the horses, and we don't try to make them fit into a life that isn't right for them.
❤️ BUT THERE'S ANOTHER SIDE TO HOOFBEATS THAT PEOPLE DON'T ALWAYS SEE.
We are a very small charity, with very limited funds.
Our ideal capacity is around 10 horses and ponies, although we are currently caring for 12.
And despite those numbers, we usually only have two or three actually ready to go out on loan at any one time.
Why?
Because among those 14 are the elderly, those with ongoing health problems, and those whose emotional or behavioural difficulties run so deep that finding them a suitable loan home simply wouldn't be fair or realistic.
And those horses and ponies will stay with us. For life. ❤️
They may never be ridden. They may never have a loan fee attached to them. They may cost us considerably more than we could ever hope to raise specifically for their care.
But they still matter.
We don't put a financial value on how much care they deserve, or a time limit on how long they can stay.
As long as they have a good quality of life, and we can keep them comfortable and happy, they have a place with us.
Whether that's another six months, six years or longer.
Because to us, a horse's worth has never been measured in pounds and pence, rosettes, jumping ability or how useful they are to a human.
Their worth is simply in being who they are. ❤️
We're not a big charity. We don't have endless funds, fancy facilities or an army of staff.
But what we do have is a genuine belief that every horse deserves to be understood, respected and given the opportunity to live the life that's right for them.
And that's what Hoofbeats has always been about.
Not finding the perfect horse for a human, but finding the right human for that horse. 🐴❤️
