🌿 People and peatlands: weaving livelihoods and conservation together

Purun is a type of grass-like sedge plant that grows in abundance in Borneo's tropical peat-swamps. Once dried, the long purun stems can be woven into an impressive variety of products, from sandals and purses to biodegradable growbags for planting trees. This centuries-old craft has been passed down through generations, providing a valuable source of sustainable income for many rural families.

Supporting traditional skills like purun weaving helps strengthen local livelihoods and demonstrates the value of conserving peatland ecosystems.

Which purun product is your favourite? 🤔

A huge thank you to Twycross Zoo for their continued partnership and support of our environmental education initiatives in Borneo! 💚

Recently, members of our Anak Sebangau children's club enjoyed a birdwatching field trip, giving them the opportunity to explore their local environment, learn about the incredible diversity of birdlife found in the peat-swamp forest, and develop a deeper appreciation for their natural heritage.

By investing in education today, we're helping to nurture the next generation of conservation champions. Thank you, Twycross Zoo, for making these opportunities possible! 🐦🌳

🌍 World Environment Day 2026: Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.

Peatland fires in Borneo don't just threaten wildlife — they impact human health and release huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, further unbalancing our global climate.

Protecting and restoring peatlands is a practical, proven climate solution. This , let's turn awareness into action.

Meet the sunbirds, Asia's answer to the hummingbird! 🐦🌺

These tiny, brightly coloured birds use their long, curved bills to feed on nectar from flowers, helping to pollinate plants as they go. Unlike hummingbirds, however, most sunbirds can't hover for long and usually feed while perched.

Found throughout the forests of Southeast Asia, sunbirds play an important role in keeping tropical ecosystems thriving – and they're every bit as dazzling as their American counterparts.

🌿 Have you ever spotted a sunbird in the wild?

🌍 Today is World Peatlands Day!

Peatlands cover just 3% of the Earth's land area, yet store twice as much carbon as all the world's forests combined. In Borneo, these tropical peat-swamp forests are vital carbon reserves and biodiversity hotspots.

But degraded and drained peatlands are highly vulnerable to fire. With concerns growing over hotter and drier conditions associated with El Niño, protecting and restoring Borneo's peatlands has never been more urgent.

Today, on World Otter Day, we’re celebrating one of Borneo’s most playful and charismatic river residents. 🦦

Otters are an important part of our freshwater ecosystems, helping to maintain healthy rivers and wetlands across Borneo. But habitat loss, pollution, and human disturbance continue to threaten the waterways they depend on.

By protecting forests and rivers, we’re working to secure a future for Borneo's wild otters, along with the countless other species that share their wetland homes. 💚
