Today is International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies — but here in Borneo, blue skies feel a very long way away.

With haze reaching hazardous levels, we’ve introduced additional measures to protect our staff, including mandatory masking above set pollution thresholds and flexible working arrangements to avoid unnecessary smoke exposure.

Meanwhile, our teams continue their vital work on the ground, helping to coordinate firefighting efforts, support local communities and protect the peat-swamp forest.

Clean air should never be a luxury. Today, we stand with communities around the world calling for the right to breathe clean, safe air — and hope that one day soon, the skies over Borneo will be blue again. 💙

💧 Preparing for the fire before it arrives.

Today, teams on the ground have been drilling boreholes at the Agus Manyan Reforestation site, securing access to water in case the fire front reaches the area.

Reaching the water table and establishing a reliable deep well can take hours of hard, demanding work, but having that water available could make a critical difference if the fire arrives.

🚨 Emergency fire update 🔥

The first fire of the season has entered Sebangau National Park — a globally important peat-swamp ecosystem and carbon store, home to the largest known population of Critically Endangered orangutans.

Our community firefighters are working around the clock alongside the Sebangau National Park Agency and Manggala Agni, Indonesia’s national fire service, battling choking smoke and extreme heat to keep the flames away from the forest.

💔 A reforestation site containing around 45,000 young trees has already been destroyed.

Our teams urgently need funds for water, equipment, food and fuel. It costs around US$100 per team each day to keep our network of community firefighters equipped and operational, and emergency reserves are rapidly running out.

Meet our Field Partner: Borneo Nature Foundation 🤝

Borneo Nature Foundation is an Indonesian-led NGO protecting and restoring Borneo's rainforest in collaboration with local people, partner NGOs, government agencies, international universities, and businesses from around the world.

In 2025, they celebrated 25 years of community-led, science-informed conservation action in one of the most biodiverse and climate-critical ecosystems on the planet.

🔥 Life from the ashes.

These striking orange fungi were photographed growing in the aftermath of the 2019 fires in Borneo.

They are pyrophilous ("fire-loving") fungi, and they have a remarkable ability to thrive where others cannot.

While fire can destroy plants, fungi and bacteria, these hardy organisms flourish in its aftermath. They help break down pyrogenic matter — the carbon-rich residue left behind by fire, including charcoal, soot and ash.

In doing so, they play an important role in helping the forest recover and rebuild.

Even after a devastating fire, nature finds ways to begin again. 🌱🍄

🔥 When Borneo’s peatlands burn, primates feel the impact.

For the Critically Endangered Bornean orangutan, fires can mean more resting, less travel, increased energy demands and changes in vocalisations linked to stress and illness.

For Endangered white-bearded gibbons, heavy smoke can silence their songs, making it harder for groups to find one another and maintain their social networks.
